UK soap operas: has the bubble burst?
From CORONATION STREET to EASTENDERS, soap operas once dominated British TV. Now, beset by disgraced stars and plummeting ratings, they are struggling to remain relevant.

Traditional soaps' ratings in the UK are calamitously down: in 2010, CORRIE could still pull an audience of more than 14 million. Today, it struggles to achieve half that. EASTENDERS, meanwhile, has been repeatedly beaten in the ratings by EMMERDALE – a shocking fact to those used to EASTENDERS and CORRIE perennially vying for the crown of soapland. The most talked about storylines involve the actors rather than the characters they play: CORONATION STREET's William Roache, who faces charges of rape, and Michael Le Vell , who has been acquitted of rape charges, not to mention Chris Fountain's outing as a misogynist amateur rapper on YouTube.

Irish broadcast TV3 issues call for soap proposals
The broadcaster has put out a proposal designed to attract UK indies to pitch ideas for a long-running drama to air twice a week or up to 100 episodes per year from 2015.

“TV3 are looking for a production that is cost effective with an efficient production structure,” the broadcaster said. “We are looking for other ways to make the budget cost effective too. This may be through possible co-production, future distribution fees or tax incentives.”

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Heather Tom on flipping houses
“We never seem to make any money doing it. But we’re not in it to get rich! Both my husband and I bought houses, completely redid them, and then we started doing projects with friends, who recommended us to friends, and now we have actual clients. We can’t say no to these things. We design everything.”

NBC Digital Layoffs Underway
The layoffs are the result of a restructuring underway by Rob Hayes, EVP Digital Media for NBC. It’s been a little more than a year since Hayes was named EVP Digital Media at NBC, replacing longtime NBCUniversal digital chief Vivi Zigler who left the company.
