She offered to give him money from her trust to help him start a business but he refused.  Nick suspected Steve was only after Betsy's money and angrily confronted him.  Nick had a heart attack and on his deathbed made Betsy agree to never see Steve again.

But Steve and Betsy were star-crossed lovers and nothing could keep them apart, including the machinations of Craig Montgomery (Scott Bryce) who ended up marrying Betsy, faking paralysis, and trying everything he could to keep Betsy as his wife.   Betsy became pregnant after making love with Steve but thought the baby was Craig's.  Eventually the truth came out and Steve and Betsy were married.    Their happiness was short-lived when Betsy had a car wreck in Vermont, had plastic surgery and lost her memory!    Betsy eventually returned and the couple was happy for a time, but Steve's pride led him to become involved in a drug trafficking ring in Greece and was sentenced to life in a Greek prison.

  1. One of the great love stories on ATWT that sadly didn't get to play out to the fullest, but boy was it terrific while it lasted!

I was just old enough to start really understanding romance (but in reality, still too young to be watching soaps-LOL-- never mind I was precocious then) and Steve and Betsey's youthful whirlwind romance appealed to the Jane Eyre/Wuthering heights sense of fantasy and dark romance.
It's unfortunate that once this couple left the Oakdale landscape, we never truly found out what happened to them. Steve must be out of jail by now!

  2. Okay, I know Steve was sentenced to Life, but as many times as James Stenbeck got out, Steve's conviction could've been overturned.

  3. Love-love-love Steve and Betsy! If my memory serves, it was mentioned that Steve swore he was innocent when sentenced to jail...and I believe he was innocent. He was tricked and used. All this happened, I think, off camera. Anyway - Frank and Meg created tons of daytime magic!!
