CORONATION STREET legend Geoffrey Hughes has died at the age of 68 after a battle with prostate cancer.
The actor was probably best known as Eddie Yates in CORRIE from 1974 to 1983, reappearing in 1987. His famous battles with Hilda Ogden went down in Weatherfield history.
Hughes passed away "peacefully in his sleep" on Friday night, his agent told The Sun.
He had been battling cancer for years and had undergone radiotherapy in 2010 after collapsing at his home on the Isle of Wight.
A spokesman for CORONATION STREET said: “We are very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Hughes.
“He created a legendary and iconic character in Eddie Yates who will always be part of CORONATION STREET. Everyone connected with the program sends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in CORRIE, said “I am so sorry to hear about Geoffrey. He was a warm, lovable actor, with great comedy timing. He will be greatly missed, one of the Street’s memorable characters”.
Yates also had prominent roles in KEEPING UP APPEARANCES, HEARTBEAT and THE ROYLE FAMILY.
I loved when he mixed it up with Hilda! Also loved him on Keeping Up Appearances. I didn't know he was battling cancer. I hope he is now at peace. R.I.P. GH!
