December 18, 1981

SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, the longest-running daytime television serial, will leave CBS for NBC beginning March 29, it has been announced by Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC Entertainment.

On CBS, the 30-year-old serial averaged eighth in the Nielsen audience-popularity ratings this year. The networks broadcast 13 daytime serials.

NBC's four serials - DAYS OF OUR LIVES, ANOTHER WORLD, TEXAS and THE DOCTORS - rank 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th.

  1. The article is useful, because it reminds us that even in 1981, NBC ws far from the top in daytime. Their perpetual also-ran status explains why, in effect, they were the first to drop out of the daytime game.

I give NBC credit for many, many experiments. Since 1981, they have generated more new soaps than any other network (which is the TRUE sign of not giving up). Alas, the audience never supported NBC in sufficient numbers...not in the last 30 years.
