INDONESIA: Reality TV In, Soap Operas Out
While drawn-out hospital-room soap opera scenes may be what many people associate with Indonesian TV offerings, ratings data just released shows that reality programs have claimed the top spots on the nation’s tubes. Reality shows have attracted the highest proportion of TV viewers since the end of the last quarter of 2008, a survey by ratings agency Nielsen shows. On the other hand, not a single soap opera managed to make its way onto the list of the 10 most-watched programs on private television stations during January and February.

B&B celebrates 22 years on the air
"Twenty-two years on television has been an extraordinary collaborative accomplishment," commented executive producer Brad Bell. "The show has now taped over 5,500 episodes and is viewed in more than 100 countries around the world. That is a testament to our remarkable cast, production crew, writers and staff, and of course to CBS, who continues to give us their unwavering support. My greatest thanks goes out to our viewers, for their continued loyalty and devotion."

Canada seeks to help struggling broadcasters
The Canadian government is ready to stop the Big Media bleeding -- or at least try. A spokesman for the federal heritage department on Thursday confirmed that Ottawa has drawn up plans for regulatory and tax changes to help major broadcasters deal with a growing TV ad revenue shortfall.

"We have always been mindful of the difficulties that have hit the broadcasting industry, and (want to) keep our options open," heritage department press secretary Stephanie Rea said, adding that no funding commitments to private broadcasters have yet been made.

BBC must cut $583 mil from budget
The BBC is planning to save £400 million ($583 million) over the next three years by freezing pay for its execs and cutting talent fees. At a media confab in London March 19 the Beeb's director-general Mark Thompson said the cuts were necessary.

"Given the falling away of household growth, the collapse of the commercial property market and pressure on commercial revenues, without a further significant reduction in spending we would exceed our statutory borrowing limit," he said.

DEEP SOAP: Pilot Light

PATRICK ERWIN: The DNA of a story
"As easy as it is for us to blame a certain writer for piss-poor storytelling (Megan McTavish comes to the top of my mind here), story creation is almost never a sole proprietorship."

MARIA ARENA BELL: "Great year" ahead
"It's going to be a great year. The 36th anniversary episode will be an extraordinary show. It will be one big story culminating and then moving on to the next. We have a wedding coming down the pike and there will be major stories, not just with our core characters, but with those you haven't seen that much, like Daniel. We have some really startling revelations and someone from the past will be returning that will be a huge story. So there's a lot brewing. We have a ton of great stuff."
