Paul Rauch Named Executive Producer Of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

Michael Logan is reporting in the new TV Guide (Sept. 15-21) that Paul Rauch has officially replaced Josh Griffith as the Executive Producer of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.

Rauch has previous served as Executive Producer at ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT, SANTA BARBARA and ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and was the Co-Creator of TEXAS, LOVERS AND FRIENDS and FOR RICHER/FOR POORER.

He has been credited as a consultant for the improved Y&R this year.

Rauch has had some amazing successes in daytime (his early years on AW were some of the best in soap history) and some huge flops (who can forget the sad last year of SANTA BARBARA and the final shot of Rauch stomping out his cigarette to end the show).

Michelle Stafford on Y&R Exit: 'My Going Had Nothing To Do With Jill and Josh'

In a very interesting interview with TV Guide Magazine, departing THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS actress Michelle Stafford talked about leaving daytime's top-rated soap (her last airdate Friday, August 2nd) and previewed her upcoming indie comedy THE STAFFORD PROJECT.

"My going had nothing to do with Jill [Farren Phelps] and Josh [Griffith]," Stafford said when asked about Y&R's current executive producer and head writer. "You don't leave a show you love after 15 years because of one person, or two people. At least I don't. That just doesn't make sense. But, if people are pissed, I can see why they might find Jill and Josh an easy target. Nobody should be mad at them."

Maria Bell Chairing The National Arts Awards, Dealing With MoCA Shake-up

Ousted THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS executive producer and head writer will be chairing the National Arts Awards, taking place October 15 in New York. The list of honorees includes Microsoft's Paul Allen, stage actor Brian Stokes Mitchell, artist James Rosenquist, singer Josh Groban and arts patron Lin Arison.

Bell is a board co-chair of the Museum of Contemporary Art in L.A. which, like Y&R, is going through a shake-up this month. Three of four artists on the museum's board of trustees have now resigned. The Los Angeles Times says the action is a warning as much as a protest. It shows how trustees critically important to MOCA's future are being marginalized.

NEWS ROUNDUP: John Ingle Memorial; Bregman & Goddard on New Y&R; Ronn Moss Says 'It Was Time To Move On'; Political Ads

Y&R's Tracey E. Bregman and Daniel Goddard confident with behind-the-scenes changes and a return to character-driven storylines
"I don’t think there’s a single person there that doesn’t feel that we are moving in a very positive direction," said Goddard. "[Josh Griffith, head writer] understands how to write for all the demographics and all the characters. The thing about Josh that’s a great asset to the show is that he’s married to the love of his life and has two beautiful daughters. As a man, he understands what women want versus someone who is kind of cut off from the real world and is trying to forge stories based upon what they think the world likes to see."

Evening News

Los Angeles Times: Soap fans claim bias against gay characters. AS THE WORLD TURNS couple Luke and Noah are relegated to hugs and off-screen affection when hetero pairs smooch away and viewers are complaining.

CBS spokesmen said the show's ratings have increased since the pair were introduced last year. "CBS supports the producers' vision for the Luke and Noah storyline," according to a statement. "We have not censored it or asked them to hold back in any way."

Jeannie Tharrington, a spokeswoman for Procter & Gamble Productions, denied the show's writers were discriminating. "We're trying to be sensitive to all the different audiences who watch our show. We do make our decision based on what we think is best for the show's diverse audience and what's best creatively."

Soap Opera Digest: Though THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS has not confirmed Lynn Latham's exit from the show, there has been an executive shuffle: Josh Griffith has been bumped up to Head Writer/Executive Producer and Maria Arena Bell has been named Co-Head Writer of the No. 1 sudser.

Broadcast Newsroom: Ripple6 has been in a strategic partnership with Procter & Gamble since February 2007, working with P&G to enhance relationships with consumers through two-way interaction and communication. Several projects with P&G are underway including a partnership to integrate the Ripple6 platform into a new site for GUIDING LIGHT, the longest running show in broadcast history. "Our consumers are increasingly participating in online communities. These communities offer potential to activate and accelerate word-of-mouth, and to build engaging connections between brands and consumers," said Stan Joosten, Innovation Manager - Holistic Communication, P&G. "Our partnership with Ripple6 has provided us a unique opportunity for marketing innovation in social media, with a look beyond traditional online advertising and toward developing even stronger relationships between consumers and P&G brands."

ABC 7 Chicago: It was homecoming week in Crete for one of the stars of ALL MY CHILDREN. Colin Egglesfield, who has played Josh Madden for 3 years, was honored by Marian Catholic High School. A Marian Catholic alumnus, the actor attended the school's annual Hall of Fame Dinner on Thursday and received the Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement award for his work in print, film and television. Earlier in the day, he visited students in theater and mass media classes, toured the school, and visited with former teachers and coaches.

Santa Rosa Press Democrat: Not many careers range from a TV biography of Howard Hughes to the sci-fi romp "Men in Black" as Tommy Lee Jones' career has. But do you remember his initial bit-part appearance in 1970's LOVE STORY? And did you know he also appeared in the pilot episode of the hit TV series CHARLIE'S ANGELS in 1976? It was a busy decade for him. He even did soap opera, playing Mark Toland on ONE LIFE TO LIVE from 1971 to 1975.

Georgia Straight: Paul Kane was living in the Waterfall Building on West 2nd Avenue when he accidentally took his first step on the path to becoming a custom-furniture designer. The units of the brand new, mixed-use structure were then without blinds, so Kane took it upon himself to drill a couple of holes, install a supporting rod, and hang some curtains in his place. Seeing this, the owner hired him to do the same for the whole building. Kane, who was raised on the West Side, had just moved back to Vancouver after an acting stint in Los Angeles (he had a recurring role on the soap DAYS OF OUR LIVES). So he was free not only to work on the Waterfall Building but, when a friend’s company relocated to larger space, to fill an order for 50 desks.

Variety: NBC may share FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS with CW, E!, TNT or DirecTV. NBC Universal execs have decided they want to go the extra yard to ensure the drama returns for a third season. To make sure that happens, conglom is having serious conversations with several networks about a plan to carve out multiple broadcast windows for the show, which has received critical worship and has a cult-like following.

San Francisco Chronicle: New DVD Releases Include "Dark Shadows: The Beginning — Collection 3" — Creepy life among the Collins family continues with more tales from the supernatural soap opera. The four-disc package has 35 episodes of the show from its early days, before vampire Barnabas Collins joined the cast and lifted the show to devoted cult status. DVD set, $59.98. (MPI)

Borehanwood Times: BBC Elstree Studios forms a crucial part of the television heritage of the area. Its closure would come as a massive blow to Borehamwood. If shows such as EASTENDERS and HOLBY CITY were to move as far away as Belfast or Cardiff then it is unlikely they would keep many cast members, potentially spoiling viewers' enjoyment of the programmes.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Co Head-Writer Scott Hamner Taking 'Leave of Absence'; Jill Farren Phelps On The Way?

Soap Opera Digest is reporting that Scott Hamner, Y&R's co-head writer, is taking a temporary leave of absence from the soap.

"I had decided to let my contract expire but Maria [Arena Bell, executive producer/head writer] asked if we could call it a sabbatical instead," explains Hamner. "She really didn't want me to leave, so I agreed to take a few months off. She has been so gracious and generous about my need to take a break and I appreciate that."

News Brief

Daily Bruin: One prime example of someone affected by scabs and financial core members is Marina Alburger, a member of the writing staff for “The Young and the Restless.” After the last episode written by her and the rest of the show’s staff aired on Dec. 24, new episodes continued immediately with writing credits going to Josh Griffith, one of the show’s co-executive producers who went financial core from the WGA in order to cross the picket line, as well as Maria Avena Bell, the daughter-in-law of the show’s creator. “It is starting to become crunch time for me financially. I have begun searching for alternative means of work,” said Alburger. “I love nothing more than to write so to have to go off and be a cocktail waitress or a bartender, it’s not for me. I didn’t go to UCLA and earn a bachelor’s degree in communication studies to become a cocktail waitress or work at Nordstrom’s. Those are fine things to be, and fine places to work, but they are not me. It’s not what I came to Los Angeles to do ... I love writing. It’s just who I am,” she said. While Alburger, like many on strike, feels frustrated by the ongoing situation, her resolve for a beneficial resolution still stands. “I have to do what I have to do and I have to stand for my guild,” she said. “It’s tough to know that the show is going on without us but we do know there is going to be a day after the strike and we do plan to return to get the show back on track.”

411mania.com: Trivia: The phrase "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV" was first said by actor Peter Bergman in a commercial for Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup in a campaign that launched in 1987. At the time Bergman was playing Dr. Cliff Warner on the soap opera "All My Children." Since 1989 he's played Jack Abbott on "The Young and the Restless" for which he's been nominated 13 times for outstanding lead actor at the Daytime Emmy Awards with four wins.

Holland Sentinel: Bill Idelson, an actor, television writer and producer who as a teenager played the son on the classic radio soap "Vic and Sade" and later played the recurring role of Rose Marie's mother-dominated boyfriend on TV's "The Dick Van Dyke Show," has died. He was 88.

Boston NOW: Mark Schwahn, the creator and executive producer of The CW's "One Tree Hill" tells Boston NOW: "I think there has to be a place for stories about people that don't have a huge hook. I always say that on a lot shows, the technology has become the star. I don't watch a lot of TV but when I did see reality TV I saw soap operas. She's the villain, he's the hero, this one's duplicitous. They were real people but the producers were very smart about stealing moments, stealing looks, and making it into a soap opera. I just can't imagine there won't be a place for that kind of storytelling. It may change, it might not be on your traditional TV set."

Metro: "Emmerdale" bosses have apparently said they are unfazed about going up against "EastEnders" after ITV changed the Yorkshire soap's schedule. The rural show will no longer be shown on Sunday evenings, instead being broadcast for an hour-long episode on Tuesdays from 7pm. It means the second half of the show will clash with its BBC One rival.

What's On TV: "EastEnders" fans will be pleased to hear that Matt Di Angelo will be making a return to the soap. But Matt, who recently wowed the nation with his sexy moves in "Strictly Come Dancing," is only back for a short time before disappearing from Albert Square for good. Matt's alter ego, Deano Wicks, comes back to Walford next month, after doing his time in jail - but life on the inside has left him a changed man and he's on the lookout for trouble.

Esquire: "Friday Night Lights" is such a brilliant, effective TV show that -- sometimes -- I don’t enjoy watching it. Very often, I will feel on the verge of tears throughout an entire episode; it is the most emotionally manipulative show ever made. Part of it has to do with its brilliant use of music; if you play Explosions in the Sky loud enough, the process of hanging drywall can be a life-altering experience. But the larger reason "Friday Night Lights" is so moving is the way it taps into all the conservative impulses most mediacentric intellectuals try to ignore. The show’s moral code is so traditional and pure that it borders on cliché. It’s reactionary in the best possible way. Whenever I watch it, I find myself thinking, I bet my parents would love this. Which is probably why I was certain that FNL looked like CBS.
