TELENOVELA WATCH: Gregorio Pernía In CORAZÓN VALIENTE And His Work In OJO POR OJO, LAS DETECTIVAS Y EL VICTOR

CORAZÓN VALIENTE
Colombian actor Gregorio Pernía joined the cast CORAZÓN VALIENTE (weeknights at 9 p.m. ET on Telemundo) this week as DEA special agent Javier Falcón, leading a guns ablazin’ rescue of Miguel (Gabriel Porras) after he was captured by men working for the mysterious Colombian drug lord known as “El Verdugo (The Executioner).”  Later, Javier showed Miguel a photograph of “El Verdugo,” giving the audience their first look at the big bad of the Miguel/Fabiola storyline and we saw that “El Verdugo” sports a black mask befitting his name, like the villain of a Santo movie.  It somehow seemed entirely appropriate to the silly universe this novela is set.  Unfortunately, when “El Verdugo” took Fernanda (Aylín Mújica) to his bedroom and began undressing her, the black mask began to suggest something out of a sex shop.  Thankfully, he removed the mask before doing to deed revealing Javier is “El Verdugo” to the surprise of no one.  So, a mysterious hidden identity set up in Thursday’s episode is revealed by Friday’s, another example of the haste at which the story beats are played on this show.

It remains to be seen how Javier/”El Verdugo” is going to fit into this already overly crowded cast, but Pernía has proven time and again to be one of the most captivating and entertaining actors in telenovelas.  His performance earlier this year on Telemundo’s FLOR SALVAJE was nothing short of amazing.  Mariano, the character Pernía portrayed on that telenovela was extraordinarily complex and layered, a man utterly depraved and peverted, an obnoxious blowhard, frightening, predatory, covetous and murderous, yet, through Pernía’s charisma and consistent ability to find quirky, humorous little touches, Mariano inexplicably remained funny and even, at times, roguishly charming.

TELENOVELA WATCH: AMOR BRAVÍO's Intelligent Women. Plus: UN REFUGIO PARA EL AMOR, CORAZÓN VALIENTE, EL ROSTRO DE LA VENGANZA

AMOR BRAVIO
So far, one of the pleasures of AMOR BRAVÍO (weeknights at 10 p.m. ET on Univision) is it features a pair of strong, intelligent women at the forefront with Camila (Silvia Navarro) and her best friend Viviana (Fernanda Castillo).

There was a wonderful sequence early this week as Camila, at work tending to the cow in labor, stayed firm as her mother-in-law Isadora (Leticia Calderón) tried to guilt her into tending for her husband Alonso (Flavio Medina) instead, recuperating from his heart attack last week suffered in the company of a prostitute. Even better was when Alonso came out himself, clutching his chest, to try and pressure Camila and she again remained strong, eventually adding that she wants a divorce. It is hard to remember the last time the guilt-trip from a convalescent didn’t succeed in a telenovela, so needless to say, Camila’s resolve was a welcome surprise. Another nice scene for Camila came as she was expressing uncertainty about her future to Viviana regarding her possible divorce and the fact that the ranch, La Malquerida, really didn’t belong to her but to her missing cousin.  Viviana tried to reassure Camila that her cousin would probably still allow her a place at the ranch to which Camila firmly stated, “No, I can only depend on myself,” a resolve of self-reliance often missing from these stories.

TELENOVELA WATCH: UN REFUGIO PARA EL AMOR Improving; Plus, OJO POR OJO

UN REFUGIO PARA EL AMOR (weekdays at 7 p.m. ET) is in its first couple weeks on Univision.  Joining ABISMO DE PASIÓN and LA QUE NO PODÍA AMAR, it makes for a fairly homogeneous primetime lineup of telenovelas for the network: all three are traditional, melodramatic romances, all three are remakes, all three are conventionally told, and, at least judging from the opening weeks of UN REFUGIO PARA EL AMOR, all three are largely successful due to the strength of their casts and production values which manage to gild the clichés in the stories they tell.

The first week of OJO POR OJO (Mondays-Thursdays at 11 p.m. ET on mun2) was the most compelling from a Telemundo production this year, begging the question: Why is this telenovela airing on the cable network mun2 instead of the more widely available main network?

TELENOVELA WATCH: OJO POR OJO and UN REFUGIO PARA EL AMOR Coming This Week; Plus, The Upfronts!

OJO POR OJO
The Telemundo telenovela OJO POR OJO (weeknights at 11 p.m. ET on mun2) finally makes its long-awaited U.S. debut on Monday, May 21st.

In the late summer of 2010, Telemundo first began airing television advertisements for this telenovela featuring three of the network’s biggest stars: Miguel Varoni and Gaby Espino, who were coming off the hit MÁS SABE EL DIABLO from earlier in the year, and Carmen Villalobos from SIN SENOS NO HAY PARAÍSO. The telenovela’s webpage and twitter account went live and all signs pointed toward an October premiere. And then, silence. The ads stopped running, the website and twitter account ceased to be updated, and the telenovela was shelved, at least in the U.S. – it aired in some Central and South American countries.
