NEWS: Sean Kanan, Angell Conwell, Redaric Williams, Scott McKinsey, AfterEllen Hot 100, 'Anyone But Me'

Sean Kanan
The Bold and the Beautiful star Sean Kanan visits The Podcastle podcast
On his loyal fans: "I've been on four different soap operas, and they always find me. I act for me, but without the fans I would probably be doing a one-man show in somebody's loft."

On the B&B production schedule: "We have 28 production weeks, and we do 8 shows a week. There's only 5 days in the production week, so we're banking 3 shows a week."

On what it's like being a soap star: "Being on a soap opera is a lot like being a WWF star. You become very famous within a very specific microcosm."

The Young and the Restless alums Angell Conwell and Redaric Williams writing together
"I’m in the process of writing and producing as we speak. I feel it’s a natural part of evolving as an actor. I’m writing a project now with my former Young and The Restless co-star Redaric Williams." Hollywood is a town where actors are constantly concerned about the next audition, the next role, and the next opportunity. Conwell remains grounded by not allowing herself to look too far ahead, "I just [want] to see myself getting better with every day."

Scott McKinsey is now directing at Days of our Lives
McKinsey won six Daytime Emmys for his directing work at General Hospital over the past two decades. He will continue working on both soaps.

2015 AfterEllen Hot 100 list revealed
Scandal star Kerry Washington kicks off the list at No. 100. Former As the World Turns star Julianne comes in at No. 87. Elsewhere on the list, The Fosters' Sherri Saum is No. 82, while Guiding Light alum Crystal Chappell is No. 57.

Award-winning web series Anyone But Me returns today with "Lost Scenes"
The series, from Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward, aired its series finale in 2012. Anyone But Me is tied with the most Indie Series Awards wins of all-time.

Executive Producer Gareth Phillips previews what's head on Irish soap opera Red Rock
With a huge body of work in the UK including dramas such as Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Cold Blood, Phillips came to Ireland initially to work on Fair City as a consultant. Then Red Rock came knocking.
"We are really building on the foundations that have been put in place earlier in the year. It’s important to remember that a lot of episodes going on the screen were actually shot some time ago – I think all our episodes up to Christmas and New Year have been shot. What I think is right at the heart of Red Rock will be seen again in the new season – that you never know what is going to happen and we are not afraid to take very big risks. We want the audience to feel like the show is a thrill ride. The show is a police procedural drama at heart after all so we want it so that the audience can never predict what is going to happen next."

ISA4: Michael Caruso Wins Best Writing (Drama)

At the 4th Annual Indie Soap Awards, ANYONE BUT ME creator Susan Miller presented the Best Writing (Drama) Award.

The nominees were:
Anthony Anderson, ANACOSTIA
Michael Caruso, DEVANITY
Sebastian La Cause, HUSTLING
Jason Leaver, OUT WITH DAD
Adam Goldman & Sasha Winters, THE OUTS
Greg Tulonen, Rick Dalton, Karen L. Dodd, Barry Dodd & Jacob Lear, RAGGED ISLE

Michael Caruso won and gave a very funny and poignant speech.
Getting this from her (Susan Miller)...unbelievable. I really was not expecting this. I know everybody says that but I really wasn't. Thank you to Roger and Damon and Kevin for this. I started writing DeVanity because I didn't have the money to pay for therapy. I thought it would be a really nice way to just create something fun. I remember Friday nights growing up the world stopped for my grandmother when FALCON CREST was on. She would not let anything happen until that show was over. I didn't know who Angela Channing was other than she was a crazy old bitch who liked grapes. It was amazing because my grandmother grew up really poor in kind of that other world country, and it was really nice to see her escape for an hour. I always wanted to do something that I thought she would want to watch one day. My grandmother passed away while we were filming Season Two of DEVANITY. Wherever she is I hope she watches my show and isn't too offended by the swearing and all of the disgusting things we do. Thank you very much, this is is wonderful.

NEWS ROUNDUP: No SMASH Musical; 5th Hour of Today?; Bill Bell Book June 1; Indie Television

No plans at the moment to bring SMASH to Broadway
"Since our creative team has been writing songs and snippets of 'Bombshell' scenes only to tell the stories of our characters in 'Smash,' there is no fully realized 'Bombshell,'" NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt wrote Thursday in an email to The Los Angeles Times.

"I'm not saying that it will never happen, but we are all focused at the moment on completing our [Season 1] finale episode and have already started talking about the macro ideas for Season 2," Greenblatt wrote, adding that next season will feature a second musical, as the fictional "Bombshell" heads to the fictional Broadway.

Top 10 Reasons Why Indie Soap Awards Rock

by Damon L. Jacobs

Yesterday I learned some sad news suggesting that the Daytime Emmys may not be aired on television this year.  Although losing that tradition would be an institutional loss for the soap community, I find that my upset is balanced out by the excitement and anticipation of the 3rd Annual Indie Soap Awards, presented by We Love Soaps, in association with The SFN.  An entire evening of celebration from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in New York City on February 21st, it symbolizes the future of soaps for fans everywhere.

I'm so excited, I decided to write my own Top 10 List of reasons why the Indie Soap Awards rock!

10. The excitement of attending live awards show in New York City.  Remember when The Daytime Emmy's were held at Radio City Music Hall?  Since 2006, the soap celebrations have all been on held on the West Coast.  The Indie Soap Awards brings the celebrations back where they belong: To the heart of the Theater District of New York City.

9.  It's a hopeful, positive event for soap community.  If you follow outlets like Entertainment Weekly, you would think that soaps are as relevant as vinyl records or typewriters.  Although network television has ended taping in New York City, the Indie Soaps are proliferating monthly.  They are providing jobs and experiences for hundreds of cast and crew members every year.  The Indie Soap Awards acknowledges and rewards the shows that are keeping the heart of serialized storytelling alive and beating.

National Gay Lesbian Chamber Of Commerce Partners With Indie Soap Awards

As organizers of The 3rd Annual Indie Soap Awards, We Love Soaps TV is honored to announce our Community Partnership with The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, New York Chapter (NGLCCNY).  NGLCCNY is committed to forming a broad-based coalition representative of the various interests of LGBT owned and friendly businesses, professionals, and students of business for the purpose of promoting economic growth and prosperity of its members.

We spoke with Richard Oceguera, President of the respected organization, about the cultural impact of the Indie Soap Awards in the New York LGBT community.  "NGLCCNY is proud to support the talented artists who are creating this exciting new wave of video content," he said. "That many of the nominees are LGBT is a testament to the massive creative and business genius that our community has to offer!"

While daytime television has wavered in its commitment to accurately and respectfully representing the lives of gay/lesbian individuals, Indie Soaps have always portrayed members of this community with complexity, depth, and resilience.  This year's nominees such as ANACOSTIA, ANYONE BUT ME, EMPIRE, GREGORY WAY TV, HUSBANDS, HUSTLING, OUT WITH DAD, PRETTY, and VENICE, all prominently feature LGBT characters with real strengths and flaws.  They are part of the very fabric of their shows, not trounced out for a "special episode."

Such diverse and rich portrayals help to transform lives, empower viewers, and validate a sense of universal experience.  Similarly, NGLCCNY offers opportunities for New Yorkers who wish to succeed in business, improve connections, and empower their personal and professional communities.  We are grateful to Mr. Oceguera for recognizing this commitment in the Indie Soap Awards, and look forward to seeing all of you there!
