Anthony Geary Leaving 'General Hospital' This Summer

Anthony Geary won his eighth Daytime Emmy award on April 26.
Anthony Geary is leaving ABC soap opera General Hospital at the end of his currently contract, and this time it's not just for the actor's annual extended vacation. Geary will wrape shooting at the end of June, with Luke airing into July.

"The closer it comes, there is less anxiety and dread at seeing the end of the tunnel and it's more like nirvana because my life is now wide open," the actor told TV Insider.

General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini made the following statement about Geary's upcoming exit from the show:

"Tony recently made his intentions clear that he would vacate his role of Luke Spencer this year, and it was a decision he did not come to lightly. After 37 years on the air, Tony felt this was the right time to bid adieu to Luke Spencer, Port Charles and General Hospital. Anthony is our friend and a part of our television family, but, as difficult as this may be, we understand and respect that this is his choice. Rest assured, Tony has promised to be with us throughout the summer as we have some exciting things in store for Luke. The door will always remain open, so don’t think this is the last you’ll see of Anthony Geary or Luke Spencer."

  1. Totally bummed as a fan, but how awesome for Tony that he's had this incredible role for four decades and is stepping out with an Emmy for one of his best stories ever. The silver lining will hopefully be some amazing work by Jane Elliot as Luke presumably leaves her once again. Enjoy retirement, Mr. Geary and I hope we'll still get to see Luke pop into Port Charles every once in awhile.

  2. If this is indeed the final end of the line, I wish Mr. Geary the best and give thanks for one of the greatest runs in the history of daytime. He's on my personal Mt. Rushmore of soap stars and he'll most definitely be missed. Enjoy him while he's still here folks because when Tony's gone, there will never be another one like him to pass through this realm.
