'Days of our Lives' Actor Freddie Smith Sentenced in Vehicular Assault Case

Freddie Smith was sentenced in an Ohio courtroom on Wednesday.
Actor Freddie Smith, who plays Sonny Kiriakis on Days of our Lives), was sentenced Wednesday to two years of community control in Ashtabula County Common Pleas court. He also had his driver's license suspended for one year.

Smith was leaving a wedding reception in October 2014 when he and his girlfriend Alyssa Tabit crashed in Ohio. Police say Smith's blood alcohol level was .093. Tabit was seriously injured and continues to recover.

"She is doing absolutely fantastic. She has a couple more weeks of physical therapy and she will be back good as new," Smith told Action News reporter Scott Taylor outside the courtroom (see video below). "It was very selfish and I am very sorry for doing it."

Smith pleaded guilty to vehicular assault. Prosecutors recommended two years of community control and driver's license suspension. The judge agreed. Smith was also sentenced to three days in jail, but that is suspended if he completes DUI school in Ohio.

Part of Smith's probation includes lectures to local high school students about the dangers of driving drunk.

"Today was very nerve racking and to hear all the support from fans, friends and family has really helped me stay strong and I really appreciate it," said Smith.

Smith will have to serve a 12 month jail sentence if he violates his probation.
