Days of our Lives star Freddie Smith (Sonny Kiriakis) has entered a guilty plea for charges stemming from the crash that seriously injured his girlfriend in far northeast Ohio.

The 26-year-old actor from Los Angeles lost control of a vehicle October 7 in Ashtabula County. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor driving under the influence.

The Star Beacon reports Fredereck Matthew Smith Jr. told a judge he fell asleep because he had been drinking. His blood-alcohol level was .093, above Ohio's legal limit of .08.

“I went off to the left, injuring my girlfriend, as well as myself,” he said.

Twenty-seven-year-old actress Alyssa Tabit of North Hollywood, California, was seriously hurt but is recovering. They had returned to Smith's hometown for a wedding.

Smith's attorney said Wednesday that Smith acknowledged in court that he had made a terrible mistake.

Yost ordered a pre-sentence investigation, and scheduled the actual sentencing for 1 p.m. February 18. Smith remains free on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
