CBS Chief Nina Tassler forced to address other hot-topics including diversity during her stop at the TCA
Tassler defended the network's record on diversity by pointing to summer series Extant, which stars Halle Berry, whom Tassler characterized as "one of the biggest starts in the universe." But that wasn't enough for critics, who perennially sound the diversity bell, noting that Extant is merely a summer series while new in-season shows are on for many more weeks. Pressed still more, Tassler pointed to the gay lead character in new comedy The McCarthys, Lucy Liu in Elementary and Maggie Q who stars in the upcoming Kevin Williamson thriller Stalker. "We always look to add more diverse characters to shows if we feel we haven't delivered," she continued, noting that the network does not look at diversity purely through the lens of in-season primetime series, citing daytime's The Talk and a commitment to building diversity behind the camera as well.

A summer of lead in this so-called golden age of television
"Big names alone do not make for golden TV. In fact, sometimes the big names are only using TV to pass off inferior work that couldn’t get big-screen funding. Some actors and actresses choose to do TV because it fits their lifestyle at the moment — keeping them near home and on a fixed schedule rather than on a far-flung location making a film, for example."

Text your friends even when you don't have service
A company called goTenna has just launched a device that connects to your phone via Bluetooth and turns it into a low-frequency radio with a range of several miles (up to 50 miles). Using an iOS or Android app, that'll let you text or share GPS locations (no voice calls) over an unlimited, free ad hoc network with other goTenna users. The team behind it says that everything is encoded, and the app will automatically retry until your message goes through -- in case you're hiking in difficult terrain, for instance. The company's planning on selling a limited number for $150 per pair on its site to raise $50,000 in funding -- after that, it'll run $300.

  1. Some other bad news/good news on the production end: In Germany, daily soap opera, Verboten Liebe (Forbidden Love) has been canceled and will air just long enough to mark its 20th anniversary in January 2015. While over here, Hulu original, East Los High, has already been given the green light for a Season 3.

  2. Yeah ... the cancellation of VERBOTENE LIEBE shouldn't be forgotten. I wondered why there wasn't anything on here yet.

It's so sad that the network has mismanaged this soap opera for so long. I remember the classic VL. The series where I couldn't wait to get home from work to watch it. It would have the most outrages and most glamorous stories. Not to mention cliffhangers that made sure you would turn in tomorrow. These days are long gone.
The slight obsession Germany had with telenovelas started to destroy the show. VL had several relaunches & reintroduced a main couple that would be featured most likely every episode and leave after a year or so. The other storylines felt pretty lame in the last couple of years.
20 or even 10 years ago, VL pushed the edge. We would see gay love scenes like never shown before on a soap opera or have characters scheming against each other as good as DALLAS or DYNASTY did it. The last couple of years, not much of this was seen anymore. Even cast members Gabriele Metzger (Charlie) and Martina Servatius (Elisabeth) criticized the writing and the network.

It's a shame. If done write - and as a half-hour format - VL could have easily lived another twenty years instead of meeting it's maker to it's anniversary.
