"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1974: Joseph Gallison debuted as Neil Curtis in DAYS OF OUR LIVES, a role he would play until 1991.

1976: On ANOTHER WORLD, Robert Delaney (Nicolas Coster) marreid Iris Carrington (Beverlee McKinsey).

1980: On THE EDGE OF NIGHT, Benny (Bennett Cooperman) pulled a knife on Nancy (Ann Flood).

1981: On GENERAL HOSPITAL, Lesley (Denise Alexander) had three men vying for her affections.

Thanks to Tricia for sending in the item above.

1981: On ANOTHER WORLD, Joey (play by Paul Perri, who returned to fill in for Ray Liotta) introduced Sandy to Larry, Jerry, Clarice, and Blaine.

1985: On DYNASTY, as Daniel kissed Krystle, someone hid nearby, taking pictures. She pushed Daniel away, appreciative for his support but still devoted to Blake. Daniel confessed that he had been in love with her for a long time, but she said she never realized. She maintained that even though he was special to her, she was still in love with Blake. Later, Daniel visited Krystle to say goodbye. He didn't believe that she loved Blake, proclaiming again that he loved her and he would return for her. Blake returned home and was greeted by Krystle. He showed her a photograph of her and Daniel kissing. She told him the truth, but he was skeptical. Below is a clip from the end of the previous episode where Daniel and Krystle shared a kiss:

1989: On GUIDING LIGHT, Reva (Kim Zimmer) and Sonni (Michelle Forbes) attempted to cross the suspension bridge in the rain.

1998: On DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Kristen (Eileen Davidson) tied up Sister Mary Moira (Eileen Davidson) in the secret sound-proof room, while Susan (Eileen Davidson) had a "Wizard of Oz" dream about Kristen taking Elvis.

2007: On GENERAL HOSPITAL, tensions were high during the Metro Court hostage crisis.

2009: On ALL MY CHILDREN, Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese's (Tamara Braun) wedding began.

"I was so honored when they called and asked me to be a part of this and do the first lesbian wedding in day time," Braun told ET at the time. "It means so much to me that we tell this story, and we tell an honest story with heart and integrity about two people who are in love and struggle with the same things that heterosexual couples struggle with."
