Telenovela Star and Former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear Killed In Robbery

Actress Monica Spear and and her husband were shot and killed on Monday night while resisting a robbery after their car broke down, according to the Miami Herald.

Prosecutors said in a statement that Monica Spear, 29, and Henry Thomas Berry, 49, were slain late Monday night near Puerto Cabello, Venezuela's main port.

Armed men approached the car and the couple locked themselves inside, police said. The bandits opened fire, injuring the couple's 5-year-old daughter and killing the parents. The child was in stable condition after receiving medical attention.

After winning the title of Miss Venezuela in 2004, Spear appeared in a half-dozen Spanish language soap operas, most recently PASIÓN PROHIBIDA and FLOR SALVAJE on Telemundo.

Former co-star Jencarlos Canela mourned her on Twitter and promised to watch over her daughter.

"I'm without words," he wrote. "I will miss my friend @MonicaSpear. And I love you, beautiful Maya. You are not alone!"

The family lived in the United States and was on vacation. Local news reports said they were awaiting a tow truck.

R.G. Morin, who writes a regular "Telenovela Watch" column for We Love Soaps, believes Spear was perhaps the best telenovela actress of her generation.
