Revisiting LOVING and Corinth on Thursday's GENERAL HOSPITAL

Former ABC Daytime soap opera LOVING is back! At least it was on Thursday's episode of GENERAL HOSPITAL. Luke (Anthony Geary) and Holly (Emma) arrived at an abandoned mansion as they continued to track Jerry Jacks. It was soon revealed they were in a "small town in Pennsylvania" that had once been in the news because of "The LOVING Murders." It was the Alden mansion from LOVING!

Luke and Holly knew the story well and there was even a "figure it out" reference. Holly stated that Gwyneth Alden "wiped out pretty much all of her friends and family in some twisted attempt to wipe away their pain." Holly held a picture of Gwyneth (Christine L. Tudor) while they discussed the storyline that ended LOVING's run. The survivors moved to New York in spin-off series THE CITY.

Luke soon discovered a bookcase that was moved in front of a hidden door. There were two photos left on the shelves: Cabot Alden (Wesley Addy)...

...and Trisha Alden (Noelle Beck).

Luke and Holly moved the bookcase and discovered the hidden door was locked (of course). As their story ended for the day Luke attempted to kick in the door.

Will there be more references to LOVING on Friday? Will Laura Wright, who played Ally on LOVING (or Roger Howarth as Kent), get in on the fun? And does GH villain Cesar Faison (Anders Hove), who crossed over to LOVING in 1993, have anything to do with this? Stay tuned.

  1. Pretty clever. I love that ABC soaps have a "shared universe" - kind like the P&G shows did. Imagine if DAYS and Y&R could pull something like that off...

    1. Aside from the crossovers to ATWT and GL after AW was canceled, ATWT kept mentioning Bay City right up until the end in 2010. There's a clip of EON in one of the recent soap history columns that talks about Oakdale.

I enjoyed the OLTL and AMC references on GH last year (in addition to the characters brought onto GH) before Prospect Park revived their efforts to bring the shows online (and sued ABC). So it's nice to have historical references again, this time with LOVING.

  2. No one love nostalgia more than I and I hate to be a killjoy - but they need to focus on their already crowded canvas before they try to pull this off.

    1. It was only a few lines in the script that would have been needed to explain where they were anyway. People that didn't watch LOVING would never even realize. Showing the photos was just a special treat for soap historians, not taking anything away from GH.

  5. Loved the line about how people "moved to the City" ... that suggests to me that, in addition to the Faison connection, there may be some reference to Tracy as well (I'm guessing - good call on that, MK Scott).

  6. It would be interesting to hear Agnes Nixon's opinion about this (since she co-created Loving), even though she no longer has ownership ties to the show.

  7. Please sign the petition to bring Gwyneth Alden, portrayed by Christine L. Tudor, to General Hospital. Thanks very much. https://www.change.org/petitions/mr-ron-carlivati-head-writer-for-general-hospital-bring-gwyneth-alden-portrayed-by-christine-l-tudor-to-general-hospital#
