THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is about to deal with the death of Katherine Chancellor, played for nearly 40 years by legendary actress Jeanne Cooper, who passed away in May.

[SPOILER ALERT]

According to Entertainment Weekly, friends and family are summoned to the Chancellor mansion on August 16th. They expect to welcome back vacationing Katherine but instead receive the sad news of her death. They immediately start fighting over Kay's massive fortune and who gets to move into her estate.

"I knew Jeanne would want me to instantly think how her death would affect the show," Y&R head writer Josh Griffith told the magazine. "She would be very upset with us if we weren't turning this into a story."

UPDATE:
Check out a newly released promo which says "her legacy will change lives forever."

And here's a sneak peek of Jill (Jess Walton) from the Friday, August 16th episode.

  2. Give Esther that mansion.

  3. With the way this show is going they'll probably have DYLAN get the mansion.

    1. Don't you mean HALF the mansion? .. Oh wait, Jill will probably adopt Dylan and give him her half .. lol!

  4. I could get into Esther battling Jill. I would be less interested in Cane battling Jill or Devon or Devon versus Cane. But wouldn't Murphy get Kay's half of the estate?

    1. I'm sorry, but I'd rather see Devon & Tucker vs. Brock and a recast Mackenzie!!! I understand she and Cane were close, but he was a freaking con artist. It infuriates me to no end that Kay and Jill still treated him like family.

  5. Jill vs Nina history, drama and so much more story and both have Chancellor heirs, Cane needs to go away.

    1. I would love Jill vs Nina. It was set up to be the next-gen Kay vs Kill but kind of fizzled out in the '90s, but the botched rewrite with Phillip III and less than spectacular casting/bad story for Philip IV. But you are right they both have heirs which is an angle I hadn't thought of to possibly renew this story.

    2. What I'm afraid of is Cane will inherit most of everything and I'm sure JFP is trying to figure out how Dylan cause be part of this story. I'm truly think the story of Kay's death by these two Josh & Jill will be horrible and agenda related. I hope Josh is out and Jill is next because they could care less about the real history. If Jill vs Nina was put to story where Nina inherited Mrs. C's half of the mansion, cast Phillip III & recast Phillip IV pitting father vs son Phillip IV hates what Phillip did to his mother so believable (compared to the half baked hunky dory with MAB) and each mother against one another is pure YR fashion...but they have no interest in the character of Jill or Nina. That's a story will set the YR on fire.

  6. I've watched her since day one...she was a wonderful actress and will be greatly missed...I'm glad they are not trying to replace her...because NO ONE can play Mrs. Chancellor like Jeanne...R.I.P my friend.

  7. I hope she has a Will that will tick some people off. I would love to see Murphy get half the house, and Esther gets millions!

    1. I agree. I hope Murphy or Esther gets it especially Esther. She deserves it and kicks everybody out except Murphy.

  8. Cane doesn't need Kay's estate he and his wife have their own home with their children. I love the fact that although Cane,Lily and the kids aren't blood relatives they still are very much a part of Katherine's family. Kay had a heart big enough to love a lot of people. I want to see how Kay's death affects the personal and business side.
Nk3play2 you say Cane is a con artist he never robbed from Kay like a couple that she took in did and he always loved her.
And what was Nina,Jill, several others in their past. Not such good people.
I wonder who will be fighting over the estate, because I can't imagine who would want it. I naturally expect Esther to remain there and Murphy. Other that that I don't see who would lay claim on it. Not Brock or Mac neither are materialistic. I can't see Devon either. Maybe Tucker.

  9. FYI....brock would be a great person to get the mansion...as in her book she tells of herself in real life where she dated him very seriously for a few yrs. This shocked me!! Granted it's not her real son of course, but I would never have guessed that one!

  10. Let the all have a share of the Mansion, and share the cost of running the Mansion. Lets see who is left standing.

  12. #Katherine's Will Should leave Monetary awards to Chloe, Deliah, Kevin, Mac Chance, Phillp and Devon. Should have the house Owned now by Jill and Esther #Equally (so Jill can't take away the only home Esther has had for decades) and should throw Chancellor Enterprises up in the air for Tucker, Brock, Jill and Cane to battle it out. ***Then discover that Cane is really a Chancellor after all. JMO!! and #WhatIF

  13. When they thought she had died before when she disappeared as "Marge" they had read her will then. I am sure it would be the same unless she changed it.

  14. I forgot to say what about Murphy? I mean he is her husband. We will see as i know this storyline will be drawn out for a veryyyyyyy long time.

  15. Maybe she has a long lost sister or brother that could come and live in the house to keep katherine's name and home alive and going on the show.

  16. She gave Esther the mansion before, and money, and it was some great moments between her and Jill! I feel Jess Walton/Jill is lost without Kay- they need to morph her into the Kay type character, since she is the longest running character (not the actress- but Jill was an original character before everyone starts to yell), and give her a Jill type to go up against. But as the powers that be are turning the show into crap, it will not be done right! The thing with Y&R was that they would bring in a new character and give them to us slowly and build their story with the established characters over time- instead we have Dylan being shoved down our throats, and Chelsea, who I had fell in love with has been ruined! She was perfect with Adam, made him a better person, and instead we have to watch this train wreck play out instead! Maria Bell may have done some insane stories, but Jill F is just terrible! Maria used the Bell formula of taking time to tell a story, we've rushed through so much lately that I've got whiplash, and we were starting to have the older characters on screen, and the whole Phyllis and the hit and run story was an "about time" moment- but new people come in and that story from the shows history disappears and we go off on the "Dylan show"! And that we could see the return of Isabella to give Paul a great story was going to be amazing, but instead they made him police chief and left that story hanging! They messed the show up completely when they removed the Bell family before, and they have done the exact same thing again! Theses people will do a huge dishonor to the memory of Kay and the show during this upcoming goodbye and will leave us all robbed!

  17. I started following Y&R in 2003, and I am grateful for the times I had watching Jeanne Cooper. She is like what Erika Slezak is to One Life to Live, Kim Zimmer to Guiding Light, etc. I always struggle when an "irreplacable" character's actor/actress passes away. Usually, as in this case, the character's death is written into the story. As with 99% of television, these are fictional shows. Is it wrong for me to strongly believe, on the other hand, that the character's story should go on? As much respect as I have for the late Larry Hagman's portrayal of JR Ewing on Dallas, I felt that the role should have been recast in order to continue the legacy of stories. After all, Dallas came back to the airwaves after 20 years with strong ratings and viewer loyalty. Shouldn't we have the option to see more of JR's story, vs. killing him off? Back to Y&R, I mean no disrespect to Jeanne Cooper's memory. But again, this is fiction. I would have liked to see Miss Michael Learned or another equally talented actress step in and continue Katherine's story in Genoa City.

    1. Hi Patrick. I understand your point about recasting characters. I think this is a special case and we're talking about a legendary actress and the longest running actress on Y&R. I am a huge Michael Learned fan from The Waltons but there's only one Katherine Chancellor for me. The character was in her 80s and we all aged and grew together the past four decades. As sad as it will be, the passing of Katherine Chancellor is the next phase for the character and it's realistic because we all have to deal with this in life.

Your Alan Spaulding example was good, and I love Ron Raines, but Alan was never the same for me again after Mr. Bernau passed away. The same goes for Edward Quartermaine on GH. John Ingle was terrific and beloved and his passing last year was devastating but the character was never as good as when David Lewis played it.

My only fear with Kay's passing on Y&R is the storyline will not do justice to Mrs. C, Jeanne Cooper and the fans, many that have a four decade investment in watching her story.

  18. A good example of what I'm talking about is when the late Chris Berneau, who played Guiding Light's Alan Spaulding, passed away in the 80s. Alan was successfully recast twice after Chris Berneau's death, thus continuing Alan's story in Springfield.

  19. Thanks for your reply, Roger. I am looking forward to seeing Ron Raines debut on One Life to Live this month. OLTL is my all time favorite; it is rare that a cancelled soap comes back to life. I'm sure that Y&R will handle Katherine's death adequeately. While I was not a big fan of Y&R's current executive producer in the past, she seems to be doing the show some justice today. To put it another way, I have not been tempted to tune out of Y&R. Someone posted they should have a long lost sister or relative of Katherine's come along and live in the mansion, etc. Maybe they could have Miss Michael Learned step into that role, or another big name actress. Having only watched Y&R since 2003, perhaps there is another "larger than life" character from the past who could return to help fill the void left by Katherine. One of the very first Y&R storylines I saw involving Katherine was the DNA test which proved Katherine and Jill were mother and daughter. I never agreed with that being reversed. Maybe, in the wake of Katherine's death, Jill will discover that she truly is Katherine's daughter after all.

  20. I didn't see them in the promos, but I'm just wondering, are they going to bring back Kay's son Brock? What about her grandaughter Macinze?
