Christel Khalil Sues Agency Over Contract; Embarrassed They Submitted Her For Y&R Role Where She Has Worked Since 2002

Actress Christel Khalil, who plays Lily Winters Ashby in THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, sued Mavrick Artists Agency Inc. in California court Tuesday, claiming the talent agency refused to let her terminate her contract after it violated their agreement and withheld money.

According to Law360, the Emmy Award-winning actress alleges in the complaint that Mavrick unlawfully converted her earnings and income to their personal use without permission, co-mingled funds from one of her projects to another and demanded payment of commissions higher than 10 percent, among other contractual violations.

“Christel Khalil, over growing and repeated concerns that the defendants had failed in their obligations under the contract … damaging her career and causing her substantial economic losses and damages, served notice of termination, thereby rendering the contract void,” the complaint said.

The suit claims Mavrick and its agents, Erick Negri, Brad Diffley and Jay Schachter, failed to comply with the Talent Agencies Act and then refused to allow her to terminate her contract. Khalil tried to terminate her talent contract in April 2013, 10 months after she entered into an 18-month agreement with Maverick.

Khalil alleges that Maverick sent her on only two auditions for series regular roles during the 2012-13 pilot season.

Additionally, Maverick embarrassed Khalil by submitting her for a role on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS where she has had a contract role for the last 10 years, the complaint said.

Khalil also claims Maverick failed to negotiate a more lucrative contract when her agreement with THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS changed, failed to send her on any commercial auditions and failed to pay Khalil her earnings for work performed as a guest star on the television show 2 BROKE GIRLS.

Khalil is seeking damages and reimbursement of all funds paid to Mavrick from the date of the contract to present.

The complaint said Mavrick’s violations “represent a patent and course of conduct that defendants engage and employ against other innocent and unsuspecting actors, actresses, artists and performers whom it represents and that its conduct and behavior … is not isolated to the plaintiffs.”

Khalil appeared on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS as Lily Winters from 2002-05, and then rejoined the show in 2006. In 2012, she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series.

Representatives for Mavrick did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Khalil is represented by Robert N. Pafundi of the Pafundi Law Firm.

The case is Khalil v. Mavrick Artist Agency, Inc., case No. BC517376, in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles.
