ISA4 Spotlight: RAGGED ISLE
Stars from TV, Broadway and The Web will come together on February 19 at ISA4: the 4th Annual Indie Soap Awards in order to celebrate and honor the very best of the rapidly-growing indie series genre. As we countdown to the big night, We Love Soaps is spotlighting the nominated series and asking producers to tell us their favorite episode of the past year.
We continue this special ISA4 feature today with the RAGGED ISLE, which won the Best Web Series (Drama) award last year and is nominated this year for seven awards:
BEST WEB SERIES (DRAMA)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (DRAMA) - Ian Carlsen
BEST WRITING (DRAMA) - Greg Tulonen, Rick Dalton, Karen L. Dodd, Barry Dodd & Jacob Lear
BEST DIRECTING (DRAMA) - Barry Dodd
BEST SOUNDTRACK (ALL SHOWS)
BEST EDITING (ALL SHOWS) - Barry Dodd
BEST VISUAL/SPECIAL EFFECTS (ALL SHOWS) - Eric Anderson & Derek Kimball
"I'd say Episode Fourteen 'Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own' is probably my favorite this season," RAGGED ISLE producer, director and writer Barry Dodd told us. "There are lots of reasons why I choose this one. It's the last episode of the series that still leaves what is happening on the island a little bit behind the curtain and it's got a great sort of calm before the storm feel to it."
"We're blessed with so many talented actors in the series and there are some powerhouse performances in this episode," Dodd continued. "Greg's [Tulonen] wonderfully written monologue performed by Suzanne Rankin about the seagull is just so full of awesome. Once the acting begins in this one, there isn't a moment wasted by that cast. The sun setting during the final scene is gorgeous and Meghan and Ian look so beautiful while it slowly descends into the sea. The last thing I'll mention about that episode is strictly for the hard core DARK SHADOWS fans out there. I don't think I've mentioned this to the public yet."
"Karen and I had taken a trip to Newport Road Island to tour some of the real shooting locations for the original series and I brought along a video camera. There are shots in the opening montage in this episode from classic DARK SHADOWS locales, including the waves crashing on the rocks from the DS opening title sequence, Widows hill, and the beach or 'Lookout Point' where Victoria Winters found the filigree pen that eventually leads to the answer of who killed Bill Malloy! Kinda geeky I know but yeah, I think it's pretty sweet to have used those spots in our series."

Nice spotlight. Thanks for the write-up. In this episode, I'm also quite fond of the scene between Vicki and her brother. It's a quiet moment of family bonding before the battle really begins. Also, we get in a sly reference to Pretty the Series! Can't wait to see you all in NYC next week.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about the Gumdrop the Unicorn reference!! LOL This is a great write-up. Thanks for featuring Ragged Isle, and thanks for all the support we've gotten from the fans, friends, and We Love Soaps!
