It was Thanksgiving in Port Charles on Wednesday's episode of GENERAL HOSPITAL which was dedicated to the late John Ingle, who played Edward Quartermaine for many years after assuming the role from David Lewis. In true "Q" fashion, the family was at odds including Ned (Wally Kurth) and Skye (Robin Christophe), who returned after learning of of Edward's death. Skye brought her daughter, Lila Rae, which was a nice treat. The show was full of wonderful flashbacks, Quartermaine infighting, and the ending was absolutely perfect.
Earlier in the episode, an escaped Heather arrived, took Skye hostage and destroyed the Quartermaine's Thanksgiving dinner (of course). Tracy was upset because she wanted it to be perfect. Their normal pizza place (the only one open on Thanksgiving Day) was closed and things looked grim. But the doorbell rang and, mysteriously, a stack of pizzas was sitting there with no delivery person in sight.
Alice brought then pizzas inside and the back of Edward is shown (see below) watching over his family. When Lila Rae said she wanted to eat, the family repeated Edward's words, "First we sing. Then we eat."
Edward's ghost/spirit began to sing "We Gather Together" and the family joined in. The camera panned out and his late wife, Lila, was sitting in her wheel chair beside him. After the family left to eat, Edward and Lila made their way to the stairs.
"What would you say if I asked you to renew our commitments to each other?" he asked.
"Of course I will, dear," she replied. And then they walked up the stairs. Fade out followed by the "In Memory Of..." title card.
It was a lovely way to pay tribute to the show's history, the Quartermaine family and the legendary John Ingle.

The ending worked perfectly. It's hard not to cry just thinking of it. It could have played out to be very corny but the proper amount of love and care was applied to ensure that it would not even have the hint of corniness. It was a beautiful, magical treat. I got goose bumps when I thought the end was just a stack of mysterious pizzas, but then to see where they went from there, I thought it was such a beautiful tribute and a genuinely touching final note for Edward.

ReplyDeleteThis was just an amazing episode. A tribute to the actor, the character and even to the Quartermaine Thanksgiving tradition. So perfect.
