The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards are tonight and I will be live blogging all the winners and other happenings starting at 8 p.m. ET when the ceremony begins.7:57 p.m.: The ceremony is starting soon. The red carpet shows were not that entertaining for me, but E! was definitely better than ABC. What did you think?
8:00: The show opens with a video "Backstage: Twenty Minutes Ago." Several female nominees are in the ladies room in robes. They just found Jimmy Kimmel hidden in a bathroom stall upset about his bad botox job.
8:02: The women "punched" his face until it looked normal? Then Jimmy realizes he didn't have pants on. Ellen DeGeneres shows up and gives him her pants.
8:04: I didn't really laugh during the opening segment. Jimmy just walked out on stage.
8:06: A Chick-Fil-A/GLEE joke.
8:08: The first genre of the night is comedy. Here comes a montage.
8:10: Enjoyed the comedy montage.
8:11: Amy Poehler and Louis C.K. are presenting Supporting Actor in a Comedy.
8:12: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Eric Stonestreet, MODERN FAMILY. He speech was sweet, thanking Jesse Tyler Ferguson and saying he never thought he would be playing a gay man on TV but appreciates all the pictures of hairy chests he receives.
8:19: Jim Parsons and Zooey Deschanel are presenting Writing in a Comedy Series. They are playing a clip of the nominees talking about teachers who inspired them.
8:20: Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series: Louis C.K., LOUIE.
8:22: Kimmel is sitting with the BREAKING BAD stars asking if they ever wondered what their shows would have been like before cable. They cut to an Andy Griffith show parody, The Breaking Bad Show.
8:23: Jon Cryer and Kat Dennings are presenting Supporting Actress in a Comedy.
8:23: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Julie Bowen, MODERN FAMILY. She talked a lot about nipple covers in her acceptance speech.
8:30: Matthew Perry is announcing last weekend's winners for Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy. The winners were Jimmy Fallon and Kathy Bates and they come out to present Comedy direction.
8:33: Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series: Steven Levitan, MODERN FAMILY ("Baby on Board").
8:35: A MODERN FAMILY clip is being show. "Lily" is being a little monster back stage. ABC must be loving the show so far, it's one big MODERN FAMILY commercial (with a little LOUIE thrown in).
8:37: Mindy Kaling and Melissa McCarth are presenting Lead Actor in a Comedy.
8:38: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Jon Cryer, TWO AND A HALF MEN. Cryer. "Something clearly has gone terribly wrong." Everything is "amazing."
8:40: ABC keeps reminding us to send Emmy congratulations to the winners on Twitter by using the hashtag #emmycongrats
8:44: Stephen Colbert is presenting Lead Actress in a Comedy.
8:45: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series: Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, VEEP. She gets on stage and starts reading the wrong acceptance speech, the camera cuts to Amy Poehler who realizes their speeches got mixed up. Hilarious! Julia is the first woman to win a Lead Actress Emmy for three different shows.
8:45: The next genre is Reality. Really?
8:51: James Van Der Beek and Damon Wayans Jr. are presenting Reality Competition Program.
8:52: Outstanding Reality Competition Program: THE AMAZING RACE.
8:56: A BIG BANG THEORY clip with the actors talking about the Emmy Awards in character. They are watching the telecast as the Certified Public Accountants walk out on stage.
8:58: Seth MacFarlane is presenting Reality Show Host.
8:59: Outstanding Reality Show Host: Tom Bergeron, DANCING WITH THE STARS. Another ABC winner, and kicking off premiere week, too.
9:01: The next genre is Drama. About time!
9:04: Clare Danes is presenting Supporting Actor in a Drama.
9:05: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama: Aaron Paul, BREAKING BAD. He's teary-eyed and thanks Vince Gilligan for not killing him off.
9:12: Kimmel brings Tracy Morgan on stage to pull a prank telling viewers to post on Facebook that Tracy just passed out at the Emmys.
9:14: The amazing Connie Britton is presenting Writing in a Drama with NASHVILLE co-star Hayden Panettiere. Then we see a clip of the writers talking about how they handle writer's block.
9:15: Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series: HOMELAND.
9:17: Now they are presenting Supporting Actress.
9:18: Outsanding Supporting Actress in a Drama: Maggie Smith, DOWNTON ABBEY. Oh no, she's not there!
9:22: Giancarlo introduces last week's Guest Actor and Actress winners Jeremy Davies and Martha Plimpton. They are presenting Drama directing. They show a clip of the directors answering if they are a dramatic person.
9:25: Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series: Tim Van Patten, BOARDWALK EMPIRE. He's not there.
9:26: Jimmy Kimmel introduces an In Memoriam segment with Josh Groban singing "You Don't Know You're Beautiful" while a tribute to Jimmy Kimmel plays. Seems like a waste of time to me.
9:26: Julianna Margulies is presenting Lead Actor.
9:28: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Damian Lewis, HOMELAND. He calls himself a "pesky Brit."
9:36: Nearly six minutes of commercials. Wow. Tina Fey and Jon Hamm are presenting Lead Actress.
9:38: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Claire Danes, HOMELAND. I'm not sure about her dress but she's gorgeous and gave a lovely speech.
9:40: The next genre is Variety. Here comes a montage.
9:42: Aziz Ansari and Jane Levy are presenting Variety Special writing.
9:43: Outstanding Writing in a Variety Special: LOUIE C.K. LIVE AT THE BEACON THEATRE.
9:46: Out to commercial. Let's see how long this break is.
9:50: We're back. The commercial break was just under four minutes. Ricky Gervais is presenting Variety directing.
9:52: Outstanding Director in a Variety Special: Glenn Weiss, 65th Tony Awards. He's directing this show so he's backstage. He keeps talking and has himself played off.
9:53: Gervais is now presenting Outstanding Variety Series.
9:55: Outstanding Variety Series: THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART. This is the show's 10th consecutive wins. He congratulated all the other nominees and made a joke that the staff gets a free sandwich after 10.
10:01: Kimmel introduces his parents in the audience. They told him he could do anything he set his mind to do, and he didn't win an Emmy so now he's making them feel guilty. Tracy is now berating them. Then security has them removed from the theater.
10:03: The next genre is Mini-Series or Movie. Cue the montage.
10:06: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or A Movie: Jessica Lange, AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Steve Buscemi presented.
10:07: Ellen DeGenerus and Bruce Rosenblum are on stage. Ellen has no pants (see opening bit).
10:13: SCANDAL's Kerry Washington is presenting Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie.
10:14: Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie: Tom Berenger,
Hatfields & McCoys. He wishes the Academy had melted the Emmy statue into multiple mini-statues for his castmates. He's getting played off.
10:16: Andy Griffith tribute time. Ron Howard comes on stage. He breaks into an Opie accent and says some wonderful things about the legend. Now the real In Memoriam segment montage comes on.
10:21: That was beautiful. I will have to go back to see who was missed but it seemed lovely and was long enough to include several crew members and not just the big stars. Take note, Daytime Emmys.
10:26: Lucy Liu and Kiefer Sutherland are presenting Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special.
10:27: Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special: Danny Strong, Game Change. Julianne Moore looks great.
10:35: A Liz & Dick commercial. I'm rooting for Lindsay Lohan.
10:36: Outstanding Directing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special
Jay Roach, Game Change. Ginnifer Goodwin and Emily VanCamp presented.
10:38: Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie: Kevin Costner, Hatfields & McCoys. He gave a forgettable speech, unless you remember it for being bad.
10:45: Outstanding Miniseries or Movie: Game Change. Tom Hanks gave the acceptance speech. Andre Braugher presented.
10:48: Julianne Moore is prsenting Drama Series.
10:49: Outstanding Drama Series: HOMELAND. Executive producer Alex Gansa said it was the biggest night of his career and he was going to talk until he got played off. MAD MEN is now 0 for 17 at this year's Emmys, a new record previous shared by NORTHERN EXPOSURE and THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW (16).
10:55: Michael J. Fox is presenting Comedy Series. I always loved Alex P. Keaton.
10:56: Outstanding Comedy Series: MODERN FAMILY. Steven Levitan gives the acceptance speech.
10:58: The show ends on time. Overall I enjoyed it. Some of Kimmel's material fell flat but overall I was entertained. I was especially happy with the In Memoriam segment although I'm sure there were some people sadly omitted.
Disappointed Maggie Smith didn't come to accept her award.
ReplyDeleteI actually got to watch the whole thing this year (usually I'm asleep or on my way to work). I guess the timing was off on maybe including John Ingle from GH but they did have Al Freeman, Jr. on the Memoriam segment (no OLTL logo though). Great to hear ATWT during the announcer's portion of Julianne Moore's journey to the stage. I thought it was kind of inventive to use the director/writer presentations as a what-would-you-do or whats-it-like-for-you format instead of the boring rushed run-through of names. BTW Roger, this YouTube video (watch?v=qfoqKt4BAPg) has the Memoriam segment but doesn't include Ron Howard's tribute to Andy Griffith part first.
