THE CHEW's Carla Hall: 'Soap Fans Have Really Come To Enjoy The Show'

THE CHEW co-host Carla Hall was asked this week about THE CHEW's "success" and the show's upcoming first anniversary. Read her response below:

The Braiser: Obviously, we love you. And congratulations on THE CHEW’s quickly approaching one-year anniversary. Did you expect it to do as well as it does and be embraced in the way that it has been, especially after the flack it got for bastardizing the soap opera time slot with a talk show?
Carla Hall: Oh my gosh, we did [get criticized]. It was crazy and Brian Frons took a lot of heat for that, and I was sad to see [ALL MY CHILDREN] go, but what I saw in it was that the soap fans were so passionate, and there’s a beginning, and middle and an end for everything, and even for us there’s a beginning.

And when something ends, something else begins, and sometimes we don’t like that change. But soap fans [and] new fans have really come to enjoy the show, and I think it’s because it’s a party in the kitchen and it reminds people of what it’s like to entertain, you know? And you have your friends and you’re talking about whatever and you’re learning, you’re cooking together, and I think the surprising thing — I was hoping that the show would be successful, but I think the surprising thing for me — was how well we all get along. We really like each other. It’s a motley crew that works.
Thoughts?

  1. In whose head and on what planet does Carla Hall reside? This soap fan still mourns my beloved shows [ALL MY CHILDREN, AS THE WORLD TURNS, GUIDING LIGHT] while mourning the lost employment of actors/directors/producers/writers whose livelihoods were eliminated. To this day, I refuse to watch THE TALK [as it replaced ATWT in the DC/MD/VA viewing area] and after following my beloved Vincent Irizarry to ALL MY CHILDREN in 1997 as David Hayward, I just can't bring myself to watch, tape or TiVo THE CHEW. GL and AMC were shows I looked forward to watching at the end of a difficult day & yet today, I can't say the same.

  2. I actually like The Chew and DO watch it.OLTL & AMC were both bad shows with bad writing & bad acting in the last few years and it was time for them to end.

  3. If she is thinking that, she better look again. Soap fans are not liking the Spew. They are not liking anything that has replaced OLTL and AMC. The only way ABC is going to get back on the viewers side is that they fixed wasn't needed to be taken down, and leave it.

  4. I watched AMC and OLTL for many years and was saddened that they were taken off the air. As for The Chew, haven't watched it and don't intend to ever watch it! What we DON'T need is another talk/food/reality show. Wake up ABC!!

  5. NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT the chew need to be off the AIR!!

  6. I wouldn't watch The Chew even if they paid me, if i want to see a party in the kitchen i'll watch the food network. The few clips i have seen of this show made me sick, they were all touching raw meat then touching each other and everything on the set without washing their hands. They're probably paying people to be in the audience like The Revolution did and that's why they think people like them.

  7. I actually don't know if I like the chew since I have never nor will I never watch it... I am/was a devoted AMC OLTL fan practically since they started and now that some of my actors are on GH I have started watching that again... I will never watch the programs that are in the place of my soaps. I might consider watching it if myt soaps come back on the air.

  8. Are you nuts? Where does this lady come up with this nonsense? We want our soaps back not this garbage!! I have not watched 1 show nor will I EVER!

  9. I don't know where Carla is getting her information from but as a dedicated Soap fan of many years, I can assure you that I have NOT come to love The Chew & I refuse to watch it! I will never watch anything on ABC that replaced my beloved AMC & OLTL and I never will!

  10. Is Carla Hall serious?! Has she seen the published ratings for the "CHEW"?? It has been well documented that The Chew's ratings are much lower than AMC and OLTL. ABC Soap viewers have stopped watching ABC daytime except for General Hospital. Everyone one of ABC's daytime ratings have suffered since AMC and OLTL were cancelled, even the top ABC show the View has seen it's ratings drop by 10%. Soap viewers are not watching and will watch any of the ABC replacement shows OR any ABC show except GH. Soap viewers want original scripted stories in their afternoon. Carla Hall and all of the ABC/Disney Executives need to read the media articles and listen to their viewers and bring our Soaps back and then ABC ratings will return to Number One.

  11. I watched Carla on the FOOD NETWORK show Top Chef, but I would never, and have never, watched her on ABC, which is not supposed to be a food network at all! I am a LOYAL soap fan who watched ABC soaps exclusively my whole life, as did my mom, sister, etc. In addition to that, our country is the most obese in the world, and garbage shows like this ABC talk show are part of the problem! The only way I will once again be a loyal ABC viewer is if they bring the soaps back, and stop shoving new nonsense talk shows down everyone's throat.

  12. This lady is living in the valley of mindless idiots; no one is watching the spew, let alone true SOAP fans. If I want to watch food shows; I turn on Food Network.. get a clue ABC

  13. I don't know what media and critic articles Carla Hall is reading but Soap Fans of AMC and OLTL ARE NOT Watching The Chew!!! ABC viewers are leaving ABC daytime in droves, all of their shows have seen ratings decrease since these great Shows were cancelled and to say Soap fans loves the Chew is a down right lie. We are not watching anything on ABC except General Hospital.

  20. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! What is Carla Hall smoking cause she is majorily delusional thinking that soap viewers like The Chew better known as The Phew. We hate this show, disgusted with ABC & their cancelling of both AMC & OLTL. There is not a soap viewer out there who will sit down and watch this disgusting show. ABC has killed their afternoon lineup by adding yet another cooking show and what the zillioneth talk show to their lineup.. Viewers don't want this crap, we want our soaps back. Get your head out of the dream worlds and smell the coffee,Carla. THE PHEW SUCKS!!!

  21. I want All My Children back and WILL NOT watch/tape anything in that time slot. There are too many talk/reality shows on the air and I want some script progamming back! I miss my Pine Valley family!!

  22. No spew, chew, GAA, or katie whatever. Loyalty lies with AMC &is OLTL. Give us back our soaps!

  23. I can not believe she thinks the ABC soap fans are happy that the soaps have not been brought back on. I for one do not watch The Chew and never will. I have not hardly watched anything on ABC since AMC was taken off and I never will watch anything on ABC daytime except GH.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Is this woman crazy. Soap fan have boycotted these crappy shows the whole time. She must be on drugs truly . Pay attention to ratings lady geez

    ReplyDelete
  25. Serious?? ABC's The Chew a success, hardly they can on most days get even 1.5 million viewers to watch. OLTL was averaging 2.2 million and up to almost 3 million viewers a day.....NOW that is what I call a successful show. But ABC has gotten what it pays for; a cheaper/lower rated program and a less and less people watch. Thank goodness there is still at least one good show on ABC, General Hospital.

  26. Carla Hall has been sniffing too many fumes. No one watches the CHEW. Let's hope it gets axed like the REVOLUTION. No one wants to watch her or Dr. Wizard's daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Another lie from ABC to get us to watch their replacements, never seen it,and have had ABC off since 1/13/12,since OLTL was taken off, keep putting all these losers shows on, and they will be canceled as quick as they come on, that also includes KATIE, if I were her I would be looking for another station for my show, but I guess her and other replacements want to go down with the ABC ship....say good bye to CHEW

    ReplyDelete
  28. This soap fan could give a crap about this show. What has she been smoking? I want my soaps back instead of this crap.

    ReplyDelete
  29. All My Children FOREVER!!!!!!!!! I have never and WILL NOT EVER watch that terrible show! "A motley crew that works?" You got the "motley" part right. They are a bunch of delusional, bigoted people with egos bigger than the entire North American continent. I hardly think that declining ratings in the network overall are any reason for celebrating the coming anniversary of that pitiful show and its mediocre hosts. When I want a "party in my kitchen" I will go to the food network where the cooking shows are quality. I, along with hundreds of thousands will continue our boycott of ABC and their horrible replacement shows. Bring back the soaps! Enough of tyhis nonsense already.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Some people including all of ABC/Disney and now Carla Hall can not admit when they have made a major mistake and that was cancelling two great Shows for no-brain cheap programs. People are not watching, if we want recipes we can go to the Food Network. What we want are great storytelling and drama in our afternoon. I know Soap Fans are not watching The Chew or The Revolution OR GAA.

    ReplyDelete
  31. rebeccakeen My main problem with your statement is that it is true. You see ABC/D decided they wanted out of the soap business 3-5 years ago. So since they didn't care about the shows, they hired people who did not care about the shows! They fired good people, wrote crappy storylines and allowed poor business practice. BUT both shows got the same or better ratings than the Spew and you must have left before it ended because OLTL was FANTASTIC at the very end. Check out GH, it has only gotten better....

Carla - wow. Can I have some of that Kool Aid you're drinking?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe Ms Hall needs to take a drug test as that would be the only explanation for this ridiculous comment. I still want AMC and OLTL back and will not, not EVER watch the drivel that replaced these two shows...to include ANOTHER incarnation of Katie Couric. If I wanted to watch food shows, I would watch the Food Network. Thank goodness GH is still on...it better stay on. I HAVE HAD IT WITH THE REALITY/COOKING/CRAP SHOWS!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, and Brian Frons took a lot of heat because he did not do his homework on how many soap fans there were an how it would affect them, not to mention all of the cast and crew that would be affected by the cancellation of these two iconic shows. THE FANS care more about these people than the jerk employers...just sayin'.

  34. Carla is obviously chewing on magic mushrooms or dipping into the cooking sherry because NO soap fan is watching The Spew, not now, not ever. She's apparently adding lying to her limited portfolio of talent (actually, it might be her only talent). Someone should tell her and the rest of the clowns at ABCD that even if you repeati a lie a million times it's still A LIE! Hall and her show-total wastes of space and air time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lol are you kidding me??!! Since AMC and OLTL were taken off the air ABC is banned at my house during the day. With the exception of General Hospital of course!!
    Absolutely no "Chew!!"

    ReplyDelete
  36. Seriously? I can't judge something I've never seen, so I did watch video online. I lasted about four minutes before turning the schlock off. The show has never been on my television, and it won't...ever. In fact, ABC hasn't been on my television since that fateful day in April of 2011. ABC: Do you hear us yet?

    ReplyDelete
  37. No disrespect, Ms. Hall, but the majority of soap fans have not come to "like The Chew" because soap fans DON'T WATCH THE CHEW! I'm happy for anyone who enjoys what they do, but AMC and OLTL didn't get that kind of respect. Their "happiness" was ripped out from under them with nowhere to go. Sure, everything has a beginning, middle, and an end, but I also believe everything has a place. The Chew is in the WRONG place! There are many shows I don't like. I don't have to watch them, but "replacing" shows that are "irreplaceable" with shows that are at the opposite end of the entertainment scale is like watching a foreign film with no subtitles.
I'm sorry for your confusion. Nothing personal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I was a fan of AMC and OLTL and would never watch any other shows in their place. We need a show like the Chew like a hole in the head. There is a cooking channel already, and cooking shows on the Travel Channel already. If I want to watch cooking, I watch one of those two. AMC was not allowed to have a respectful end. It was go given an end thinking it would not really be the end- that it would go on , online. The end left us hanging. It was not a natural end- either. Just greed on the part of ABsleeze thinking they could make more money with a show that had no real writers or actors. I do not know a single AMC or OLTL viewer who watches The Chew.

  39. Has Ms. Hall lost her FREAKING MIND???!!!! Thinking that soap fans DO love "The CHEW"???!!!!;(

  40. Love the passion in this thread! If I had one wish, I'd turn the clock back 20 years and make sure that ATWT, GL, AMC and OLTL never went off the rail as they did. P&G not giving a damn about either of their shows and hiring EP's and HWer's who didn't fit and damaged the shows. ABC hired Frons, enough said. He killed AMC, gutting the heart from it by hiring crappy Headwriters (McTavish, B&E, Pratt and Kreizman)
and an Executive Producer who didn't know the shows history. OLTL? He hired Higley, one of the ultimate soul suckers in daytime. But, at least, Ron was promoted as HW and DID the best he could under Frons' command.

NOW, understand this, ONE LIFE had turned itself around and was going UP, that's well documented. It's replacement, THE REVOLUTION stunk and was axed, rightfully so. Good Afternoon America is temporary...NOT a replacement for GH. Possibly a replacement for THE CHEW or KATIE. Frons is gone from ABC and so are the idiots who did his bidding.

Karla Hall (I almost used a 'C' for Karla,
referring to an original OLTL character!!!)
seems a little spacey to me. An easily swayed and convinced soul, apparently. So sad. I
haven't (and won't) watch THE CHEW.

  41. Would never watch this show...It looks awful and the guy in crocs needs to grow the heck up. I miss my show but even if I didn't I wouldn't watch this one. If I wanted a cooking show I would watch the foodnetwork. Which I do. Sorry this show is dumb and really doesn't have anything to offer me that I would be willing to turn my tv on for.

  44. A-choo! Where did you get that information, Carla? We hate the Chew!!! And your ratings aren't high enough like they were before. I bet, before your 1 year anniversary next month, we'll say bye-bye to your show next, following by GAA and Katie.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Obviously, this person is completely out of touch with reality. This soap fan has never watched and will never watch this moronic show. I await the day when the Nixon soaps make their triumphant return. Frons didn't take enough heat. One of his sure hit replacements has already departed, and hopefully this one will follow soon!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is absurd! The soap fans don't want The Chew, they want soaps. What's more, who wants to see another talk show?! Let alone, about food. Food is to eat, not to watch. This woman is clearly delusional. The Chew's ratings are horrible! Bring back the soaps!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Carla, honey, you are totally dillusional....I do not watch the Chew and I will never watch the Chew!!!!! There are cooking networks for your kind of program. You are sadly mistaken if you think we soapers are watching. And Brian Frons.....we hate him!!!!! He ripped apart thousands of hearts with no remorse. Sorry Carla...please don't misquote us. I will repeat....we never have and we never will watch the Chew on ABC!!!!!

  48. Is she for real? What the heck is she smoking over there??? Soap fans have 0 interest in this cheap, unworthy show that replaced AMC. Either she hasn't seen the ratings or is just clueless to see what is going on. Nobody is watching ABC daytime anymore. She'll figure it one day when her show is gone.

  49. Are you kidding me? No soap fan I know is watching The Spew! No soap fan I know will ever watch The Spew! Not now, not ever! Get a clue ABC/Disney!!!!

  51. I and millions of other fans who deeply miss All My Children and are continuing to fight for its return to the airwaves could not disagree more with Ms. Hall's assertion. We ARE passionate about our soaps and refuse to watch generic programming like The Chew that is already available on other channels like Food Network. Did she not see how The Revolution was canceled?

    ReplyDelete
  52. She is completely delusional! This garbage will NEVER be watched in my home, and NOTHING will ever replace AMC or OLTL.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I only watch General Hospital on ABC. I loved One Life to Live and still feel as if I have had a death in the family. I would NEVER watch the Spew/Chew or any other replacement show on ABC. Disney channels are blocked on my Dish network and when or if GH gets canned so will ABC be. Soap fans are the most loyal of all fans and I am sure that they / as me are not watching any replacement show on ABC's lost love in the afternoon. What a joke this woman is!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I only watch General Hospital and Castle on ABC- I don't know where Carla gets her information on Soap fans ---but she is wrong! Soap fans are not watching the Chew----or anything else ABC has on except Gh of course-- Good grief--Carla is on Latenight with Jimmy Fallon on NBC!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  55. As a soap fan, I do NOT watch the SPew, nor anything else they will be putting on during the soap hours. Carla is not up to date on her fan base! I am not watching any of the new ABC shows either!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree Carla Hall is nuts. I have loved AMC,OLTL, and GH and have watched them forever, Frons made a big mistake. I have never watched nor will I ever watch the chew or phew. The Revolution lasted 6 months can't wait to hear when the phew is cancelled. If I want receipes I'll look them up on the internet as I have always done. I want my soaps back. Thank God for The Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful. They almost took General Hospital too. It's safe for now since it was the most popular on ABC not to take anything away from AMC & OLTL I've watched them since they were born.
