Today in Soap Opera History (July 13)

On this date in...

1905: Crossover soap actor Geoffrey Lumb, who took the character of Mitchell Dru from THE BRIGHTER DAY to AS THE WORLD TURNS to ANOTHER WORLD in the 1960s, was born. The character left Bay City in 1971 to go on an around-the-world tour. He died in 1990 at age 85.

1922: Lois Kibbee, best known for her role as Geraldine on THE EDGE OF NIGHT, was born. Kibbee also played roles on SOMERSET, SEARCH FOR TOMORROW and ONE LIFE TO LIVE. She even appeared in the movie Caddyshack. She died October 18, 1993, from a brain tumor.

1965: On ANOTHER WORLD, Lee wasn't happy when Dr. Lewis said she could go home at the end of the week.

1966: On THE GUIDING LIGHT, Leslie tried to soothe Ed's feelings of angst over his conflict with Bill.



1982: Renee Jones taped her first episode of DAYS OF OUR LIVES, but in the role of Nikki Wade which she played until 1983.  She recently left the show after many years in the role of Lexie Carver.

1983: On ALL MY CHILDREN,  Tad returned to Pine Valley and clashed with Opal.



1990: On DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Hope and Ernesto vanished after an electrical explosion.



2000: Burt Douglas, who played Jim Fisk on DAYS OUR LIVES in its first year, died at age 69.

2005: The character of Darcy Tyler left NEIGHBOURS after five years.



2006: Red Buttons, who played Al Baker on KNOTS LANDING, died at age 87.

2009: On THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, Phillip (Thom Bierdz) came out to his family.
