Rewind: The Enduring Thrills of the Gothic TV Soap DARK SHADOWS
Under the aegis of Curtis and his team, Dark Shadows pulled its inspiration from countless literary classics, fusing together the works of Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, H.P. Lovecraft, Henry James, Oscar Wilde, Shirley Jackson, and others with a familiar soap-opera structure, a haunting backdrop, and a revolving door of characters that included socialites, factory workers, con men, and a witch or two. Larry Hagman recalls fan attack
“One time I was having a lovely lunch in a hotel and I saw an old woman coming down the way and she must have been about 85, she was on a walker. I thought she was coming down to ask for my autograph and she got down to me and took her handbag and hit me upside the head and knocked me off the chair and it really hurt. She said, ‘I’m so sorry my husband gave me my pistol when I was 22’. She had a 38 in her bag. I thought that was funny. She said, ‘You dirty rascal you, what are you doing to poor Sue Ellen’ then bam, she hit me.”

Digital Upfront 2012 - The Review
So was this inaugural event successful?

Yes, kind of. While the conversation surrounding the monetization of digital video had already begun, it can be said that the Digital Content NewFronts were necessary to propel it forward, from a discussion point to one that leads to action. Surveying Digitas' NewFront, which provided a window into where both content providers and advertisers stood on the path to developing a digital video marketplace, it didn't appear that this was a fool's errand. There were opportunities at the Digitas NewFront for brands, agencies, and content creators to meet, discuss, and negotiate deals -- with some 40 or so of such meetings taking place during the six-hour event. This coupled with reports of the individual DCNF presenters sitting down with advertisers indicates that there is legitimate interest in such a marketplace.
