FAN REVIEW: AS THE WORLD TURNS on DVD 4-Disc 20-Episode Collection

We Love Soaps wants to know what our readers think! We kick off a new series featuring fan reviews by asking longtime AS THE WORLD TURNS fan Jamie Misiak to weigh in on the new AS THE WORLD TURNS DVD set that was recently released by SoapClassics.

I recently purchased the AS THE WORLD TURNS 20 Classic Episodes DVDs from www.soapclassics.com. When these DVDs became available I couldn't wait to get my hands on them. I popped one in my DVD player as soon as I got the box open and I'll admit I watched them all night!

DISC COMMENTARY
I thought the four categories that the discs were broken down into were awesome choices for the first ATWT set.

Disc 1 included "Great Weddings" and if anyone knows me then you know I went directly to Episode 4 which is "Lily Walsh Marries Holden Snyder" and I couldn't stop smiling the whole time I watched it. All in all the 5 weddings that were picked were good ones. I wish that the wedding of "Tom and Margo" would have been of Ellen Dolan and Scott Holmes because those are the two actors that I remember the most as those characters.

Disc 2 is "Secrets and Scandals" and boy did ATWT have a ton of those! I wasn't real familiar with Episode 1 with Bob and Dana. I understand why it was chosen, maybe for the older viewers, but I just couldn't get into it and it lost my attention fairly quick. The rest of the episodes are great choices. If you liked intense episodes that included a lot of the characters then this is a "must see" disc!

Disc 3 "Oakdale Through The Years" was the disc that I enjoyed the least. I liked the different Anniversary Shows but "Christmas at the Snyder Farm" wouldn't have been my choice. There were so many fantastic Christmas episodes and I just feel like this episode was too recent and not exactly a good one to use as an ATWT memory. I hope they put out more DVDs and use other Christmas episodes from the past with more of the "real Lily" and Holden and all the Snyder clan.

Disc 4 included "Villians and Vixens" my 2nd favorite disc in the set. In my opinion this disc could have been all 5 episodes of James Stenbeck! Just to hear him say "Hello Barbara" in Episode 1 made me jump for joy! He was 1 of the greatest villians in daytime. I would love to see a whole ATWT set of nothing but the greatest James Stenbeck moments. Who wouldn't purchase that one?

CONCLUSION
As a long time fan of ATWT, I would most definitely recommend this DVD set to anyone who watched the show. If you were a part time, long time, new or old viewer there is something on these discs for everyone. I went from laughing to crying to so many different emotions with each episode that I watched. It was so nice to hear and see the different beginnings of the show and each one brought more tears to my eyes. I'm glad they left those in as well as the opening and closing credits.

As a huge Martha Byrne fan it was wonderful to see her in so many of the episodes. Also I was very impressed with the quality of the episodes, even the old ones, very clear and not like watching online. I watched ATWT for close to 25 years and to have some of my favorite episodes on DVD that I can watch anytime is amazing. I can only hope that this is just the beginning and many more DVD sets will be available.

So ATWT fans BUY yours today! I promise you won't be disappointed. Let the people involved in soap classics know we appreciate what they have done and that we can't wait for more!

  1. Overall, I have really enjoyed this collection. I love the rich history of this show and am fascinated by the Marland era in particular.

I have been an avid viewer since the spring of 1996, but have vivid memories of of the showing playing in my grandma's living room throughout the 1980s and 90s (she was a viewer from day one).

These episodes have been a great trip down memory lane, but are also a sad reminder of what could have been...so many characters were underutilized or destroyed during the last ten to fifteen years of the show.

These episodes (and others on YouTube) demonstrate the vitality of folks like John, Lila, Ellen and Iva. Having this collection has been so positive and I want to focus on the positive...but there is some sadness and longing as well.

  2. Haven't received my DVD package yet - can't wait! - but I can safely say I agree with every word written here. Particularly about the 2009 Christmas show. Why that is included here is beyond me. The 2007 (Luke walks again) and 2008 (Victorian Doll House) episodes are miles and miles better than this not-so-great 2009 episode. Ah, well. Hopefully they will be included in future sets! Can't wait to receive my package in the mail!

  4. Great quality episodes. So far I have watched Lily's World Crumbles and The Explosive Truth...I have a major complaint...Why was the closing of Lily's World Crumbles not included?? It had no commericial tags at the end..come one..include the whole episode if possible...not happy about that.

  5. HORRIBLY disappointed in this set. The 1981 episode on the 4th disc, with John's fall down the stairs, has NO AUDIO. The whole episode is silent. Add that to episodes that inexplicably have the openings/closings cut, and you've got an unhappy customer who buy mor episodes and will recommend that others don't buy either.

While I'm grateful that someone has done this, it should have been properly and not rushed. And don't give me the line "they had to cut openings/closings" because I've got the original air copies of some of these, and there were NO sponsor plugs on some of the episodes where they were. Also, any fan at home could have edited it so that they credits were in tact, and they could have dubbed a clean copy of the theme music with no voiceovers.

But really, sending out dvds with no audio is well bad. You want people to support you, you better do better than this. Sorry. JMHO.

  6. Joseph ...I just noticed that some do have commericial tags in the opening. It makes no sense that some were included meaning opening with tags yet others wont whether it was the opening or closing...

  7. I got my dvds in the mail last wednesday.First great turn around from order to receipt.I loved every episode except the Snyder christmas one.I think there were better ones say...The 1985 christmas with Doug Cummings stalking Kim or one from earlier focusing on The Hughes clan I felt would have been better but otherwise as a viewer since the early 80's I'm in ATWT heaven and hope more collections are to come from this.

  8. Thank you Soap Classics. This collection was great. I hope if this continues in the future that we will see more episodes form the time Douglas Marland was headwriter. His stories were some of the best.

  9. Great collection, and I look forward to many more, Guiding Light included. The one episode with sound problems is Humiliation on villains and vixens disc...sound works only when I play the disc on computer..no sound at all on dvd player..I am willing to forgive this and will continue to support these dvd releases, they are truly a fans dream come true.

  10. Just received my copy --- this is fantastic and I applaud the efforts of Roger and the others who have made this possible! This was well worth the money. These episodes were in pristine condition, as if they were just being broadcast for the first time! Amazing! I would definitely pay to watch streaming episodes to be able to watch them in order with full continuity from the earliest ones in the 70s.
