NEWS ROUNDUP: Eddie Alderson Back, DePaivas Sell, Grahn on Ainsworth, GLEE Adoption Controversy

ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Eddie Alderson returns in November
Alderson returns to work this week. "[Matthew] misses Llanview, he misses being awake and being able to talk," Alderson said at the recent Daytime Stars and Strikes for the American Cancer Society event. Alderson's scenes will air sometime in November.

The DePaivas sell their co-op at the Manhasset
“It just seemed like the right time,” ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Kassie DePaiva said. The couple decided to sell their home when rumors began swirling that the show would be canceled. “That was one of the reasons we put it on the market, because I didn’t know where we’d end up,” the actress explained. “I didn’t want to have to carry that financial burden, and I didn’t need that much house,” she added.

Originally listed in Spring 2010 for $2.995 million, the property was sold for $2.58 million in late August.

Webheads don't know much history: Tradition is almost invariably dismissed
Networks choosing to jettison long-running iconic shows admittedly set up a tough situation for executives. They can't be shackled by the past -- especially given how fast the business is changing -- and usually derive less credit from shepherding someone else's development than launching franchises of their own.

Yet a more subtle aspect of this has to do with the over-arching preference for the new. Because everything in media dictates younger is good -- starting with demographic pressure across all ad-supported channels -- the corollary is that older, or anything smacking of it, must be bad.

GENERAL HOSPITAL's Nancy Lee Grahn Speaks Out On Lexi Ainsworth's Exit
Grahn says in a statement posted on her Twitter page. "It will also come as no surprise that I am sad about her leaving... and yes, tears were shed.

"Very often things out of our control turn out to be the most perfect orchestration of circumstances that lead to even better experiences, that shape our lives in profound ways," Grahn continues. "As much as I will miss Lexi, I believe this will end up being a blessing for her. At 19, there are endless acting opportunities, and now she is free to pursue them. My TV baby is a beautiful, classy young woman with a fantastically, supportive family, and a bright, bright future. I'm so excited for her."

Abortion a muted matter on GREY'S ANATOMY
During the recent eighth-season premiere of ABC's GREY'S ANATOMY, Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) had an abortion.

It was not the first abortion for a character on network television — that would be MAUDE's in 1972, just before Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal nationwide — but it was the most culturally significant since then. Because unlike virtually every character who has ever had, or contemplated, an abortion (and on TV, fewer women have abortions than have brain surgery), Cristina is not a teenager, or a rape or an incest victim. She is not poor with eight kids and an abusive husband or suffering from mental illness. She does not have a rare disease that makes pregnancy a physical risk. Unlike Maude, she isn't an "older" woman with mid-life concerns. Cristina is married, healthy, financially stable and of prime childbearing years.
