Why Oprah Says She Can't Save The Soap Operas

Oprah Winfrey has made a video in response to all the requests from fans who want her to "save" their soaps following the recent cancellation of ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

Said Oprah, "If there was a dime left to be made from them on broadcast television, it would still be happening. All things come to an end. All things have their time. I will not be taking on the responsibility to revive an institution that, for all intent and all purpose, indicates that time has come for it to be over. Thank for you for believing I can save them, but I really can't."

EDITOR'S NOTE: The video has now been removed from YouTube.

  2. Thanks for nothing, Oprah. People have said that you're one of, if not the most, influential and powerful person on television. Obviously, that's not true.

Therefore, I will NOT watch your network and will not shed a tear when you finally sign off because, for all intents and purposes, I can't stand you.

  3. Wow Oprah, we thought you were one united with the awesome daytime group.. Did you make so much money that you forgot WHO helped get you there? Go ahead and give away your free cars and money... Thousands of us will not be watching you do it! How could you be so callous towards your fans of so, so many years? OWN will not be watched in our home. Thank you very much!

  4. I am not a fan at all of Oprah and I never have been, but I must say that what she said and did was very classy. She didn't even have to take 2 seconds out of her day to address this, not to mention 2 minutes. What she said is absolutely true though, the viewers are just not there anymore. Period. It's a fact that cannot be overlooked. I am very, very upset that soaps seem to be coming to an end, but just like Oprah said, one person cannot revive an institution. It's the ratings that are dragging soaps to their demise.

It's a sad time for all of us soap fans, but I don't think there is much we can do. All we can do is hope that the current audience of AMC and OLTL will need their 'soap fix' and head over to the remaining soaps so that we don't lose all of them.

  6. There IS a market for soaps. Look at the continuing success of telenovellas. People are CRAZY about them. Desperate Housewives was wildly popular and it was a soap.

People want continuing drama. We're inundated with reality and talk shows til we can't change the channel without seeing them. That market's saturated.

I don't know what the answer is because I know ratings are floundering. I think someone needs to take a fresh look at the soaps and do something different WITH them before they're gone entirely.

If not, we're gonna have MORE talk shows with people talking AT us constantly. Or hey, there's always some new reality show where we get to focus on spoiled people.

  10. I never thought the grand pooprah would step up. Everything she has ever done is for her own grandiosity. She is a modern P.T. Barnum. She is at the other end of the spectrum, but same page as donny trump. She hasn't been concerned about the public-at-large since the cattle industry beat her down. She is as much of a corporate tool as frons, obama, ryan, et al. and got lucky with a tv talk show with a warm "come tell momma all about it" style that was novelty at the time. Her toy 'network' will fail as it is a saturated market for redundant tv. Ironically, the soaps would have been HER salvation. How undeserving of praise can one get. She's got a big mouth and she marketed it well. Kudos to the OW.

  11. there's no surprise since they are all connected...opraha, rachel ray, and batali (besides through glutony and greed)

  12. ADD Opah to the '2SCRUB' list along with Rachel Ray, Mario batali, etc and anyone else who supports this draconian debacle. They may do what they will, but they will never ever get a dime from me.

  13. Its her style..all about SELF, SELF, SELF. She reaped great rewards off of promoting a "SELF-Centered" culture. The Poprah mantra; "Me, Myself, and I". She is nothing more than a 2-bit phoney all fancied-up.
