"The serialized format has spread out just about everywhere you look," he says. Four decades ago, most shows presented a self-contained story every week. But now, "it's all branded to hook you in, to tune in tomorrow."

I'm only doing what every other girl of 17 does. It's not an excuse, but out of all the things Lucy has done, the only one I've done is drink underage."

  1. Brash's perspective on the demise of daytime soaps (i.e., that the best continuing drama has moved elsewhere--to nightime, etc.) concurs entirely with mine.

While many of us will mourn the loss of daytime "families" that have been with us for decades, I take great comfort from the fact that the state of serial drama has never been healthier.
