  5. Good interview. I think The DVR killed the soap star, as the song goes. I like coming her and We love soaps, I don't care for the tabloid crap either. I'm straight but I've watch soaps since the '80's, we couldn't get cable out were we lived so didn't have a lot to choose from, my mom and Grandma would talk for hours about ATWT & GL. My mom was working for Sears PT, worked in the woman's section next to the TV's started watching ATWT after my sister was born and after the famous news break of JFK; working at Sears just got the new models in, then it happen, every one stooped doing they were doing. ATWT and GL had the first African American; GL had James Earl Jones, and Billy Dee Williams, Star Wars connection. It's a shame were loosing these historic soaps.
If your not tired of old clips, here is raw uncut JFK newsbreak.
    Post this on your site.

  9. Fab interview Roger and Damon. Jamey made some great points with regards to the soap genre in the States. One point which especially struck a chord with me is with regards to the lack of diversity in American soaps, which is something I have been thinking a lot about recently. As I live in Ireland, my exposure to American soaps has been limited to GL (due to Otalia storyline) and a bit of DOOL when Crystal returned to the show initially (I couldn't bring myself to watch it after Carly got back with Bo after less than three months...so much for not using her as a foil...Crystal deserves so much better). Anyway, I digress.

Whilst American soaps have brought some realism to their stories over the years...Lillian's cancer story on GL, and also the spousal rape in the Roger and Holly storyline, I agree totally with Jamey that the storylines, for whatever reason, have reverted to something back in the 1950s. Whilst soaps need to have some elements such as villian and hero/heroine, romantic triangles, they need to add more diversity. Soaps could take a leaf out of the german soap, Marienhof which includes some of the following characters: youth with autism, guy in wheelchair (as he is in real life), lesbian couple, gay guy with kid, woman with weight issues, and an illegal immigrant. Now that's what I call true diversity.

When I first started watching the Otalia storyline on Youtube, I was asked in an interview with Eclipse Magazine if I noticed any difference between the American soaps and soaps on this side of the water. At the time I replied that the story of Otalia was one of love and love is universal. Having a bit more insight now, I really think that if the American soaps want to survive, they need to get away from just rehashing the same old stories of love triangles and deceit and become more real to life. They also need to move away from shooting indoors and to change their production model to what GL had. The writing also needs to improve...I don't know whose hands are tied with regards to this, but watching a talent such as Crystal Chappell being wasted on DOOL is sad to see (when you've had silk it's hard to go back to cotton...I'm referring to CC's amazing acting on GL).

The characters themsevles also need to be more true to life. While we all love a bit of pretty on the tv...yummy Crystal, Jessica Leccia, and Nadia Bjorlin for example, our soaps on this side of the pond, such as Fair City, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, and Eastenders have more ordinary looking cast members, which add to the characters they play, in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm really glad you raised these issues, and I hope I haven't offended anyone with my comments. :-)
