Thank You From Damon

Dear Readers,

I wanted to take a special moment to thank you all for being part of this wonderful tribute to the life and career of Frances Reid.  It has been a hard day for me losing Frances Reid just weeks after the loss of my real-life grandmother.  But thanks to the contributions today from Bill Hayes, Patricia Pease, Kevin Spirtas, Roger Newcomb, all the tweets from the DAYS cast during the day, and all the beautiful statements received from our readers on this website, I have felt much more connected and hopeful.  I feel fortunate to be part of such a supportive and caring community.  Thank you everyone!

  1. Damon, it's been abut 5 years since my own beloved grandmother passed.
Ironically, she could never understand my devotion to soaps but let me watch DOOL, in part because of Alice Horton steering the ship.
Your grandmother will always be in your heart - and if like mine, a frequent visitor in the dream realm, too - and I know that soon your loss will be less painful and you can smile again at the warm memories.
Hope you take some time for yourself this weekend.
    A fan,
    Mo

  2. It has been nice to see the outpouring of love for Ms. Reid. I'm glad we took a day out from the Top 50 Countdown and just paid tribute to her incredible contributions.

Your grandmother seemed like a great lady as well and I'm sorry for you loss.

It's nice to hear that you feel better as result of the loving statements made by various folks because your positive outlook and approach to life is pretty darn inspirational to people as well.

  3. Damon-
Last night we made a toast to Frances Reid at the bar I work at in Astoria. All the customers there knew who "Grandma Alice" was from Days of Our Lives.

We should take comfort from the fact that she lived a long, full life filled with people who loved her.

My only Grandmother passed when I was 10 and she was the one who got me hooked on her "stories." Watching the Soaps has always made me feel more connected to her memory. I hope you find something similar for you that can keep the connection alive within yourself.
    My best to you always
    Matt

  4. Damon, I lost my dad 9 years ago this month, and my mom 20 years ago last September. Soaps were one of the many ways that my parents and I connected, and it all comes from my own grandmother who introduced me to the genre when I was a small tyke. Without her I wouldn't have ever watched Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow or the rest of the CBS line-up. She gave me a great gift and I will always love and remember her for that. It's such a cliche to say that it gets easier, but the memories will always be there like a slankie that you can put on to feel safe and loved.

Frances Reid as Alice Horton was one of the many reasons I used to DOOL back in the day. She was the nononsense grandmother who loved you no matter what. Her relationship with Tom Horton was one of the loveliest on daytime.

  6. Hi Damon!

My late grandmother (since 1985) & late aunt (since 1994) both loved watching Frances/Alice for many years on DOOL.

As a sidenote, if you can find it, please read actress/director/theatre producer Eva Le Gallienne's 1954 memoir With A Quiet Heart. Miss Le Gallienne gave wonderful praise to Frances's performance as Julia in The Rivals, an 18th century English restoration comedy that Miss Le Gallienne directed in the early 1940s. It's a fun backstage read! :)
