50 Greatest Soap Opera Actresses: Honorable Mention

Now that the countdown of the 50 Greatest Soap Opera Actresses has concluded, We Love Soaps would like to pay tribute to another set of wonderful actresses. These ladies received multiple votes from our panel and just missed the countdown. For us, it's more about honoring their work that has touched so many lives more than a specific ranking. The list is sorted by the decade and the date the actress started on soaps. Join us in paying tribute to these fine talents and if your favorite has been mentioned, please share your memories/videos/photos in the comments section.

  1. Great list although I would've liked to see Gina Tognoni's name in the 2000 list.

  2. How about Ann Flood, The Edge of Night's wonderful Nancy Karr (1962-1984) and then of course Bitsy Davidson on AMC? Her performances still stick in my mind.

  3. Seconded about Gina Tognoni and no Beth Maitland? Really? Thanks for the list guys. It was great fun to go through the countdown. Your presentation was excellent.

  4. Again, a great list with some incredibly talented ladies who also gave us or continue to give us many hours of entertainment. I'm sure I will think of others but two in particular came to mind that were omitted:

    1) Joan Copeland who was on several soaps but should be remembered primarily as the mother-in-law from hell, Andrea Whiting, on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW (I was a youngster but can still vividly remember her courtroom meltdown scene when she gripped her pearls breaking them & sending them everywhere) and

    2) Sofia Landon who was so delicious as a bitch supreme on GUIDING LIGHT as Diane Ballard

  5. What about Tricia Cast? I think she deserves to be on this list and lauralee bell as well. of course this list just proves there is such a wealth of great actresses out there in datyime. kristina Wagner is another i think belongs on this wonderful list too and andrea evans did i miss her name ?

  6. Jamilla - Tricia Cast is on the list...and deservedly so...

  7. What a great shame not to see the powerful, beautiful and admirable Tonya Lee Williams here. I feel that she should have replaced soap sister/scenery chewer Victoria Rowell in the rankings of Greatest Soap Actresses. Again, she has been egregiously overlooked.

Btw, you should really have replaced Laura Wright with Gina Tognoni. Tognoni brings quirky, mercurial life to every part she plays - Wright brings a loud voice and that's about it.

  8. No Annie Parisse (Julia, ATWT) or Wendy Moniz (Dinah, GL)?

    Eden Reigel?! REALLY?!!

  9. Finola Hughes should of been on that list.

  10. Funny--there are more of my faves on the Honorable Mentions list than the Top 50! Kate Collins, Julianne Moore, Marie Masters, Robin Christopher, Christine Tudor, Robin Mattson...

Thank you guys so much for doing this. Great fun!

  11. Any list of this nature that does not include the beautiful and talented Cady McClain somewhere near the top loses any credibility. There are actresses on this list who have failed to contribute one tenth of what she has to the genre and to the fans. And, I'm sorry, I will never understand all the love for Susan Flannery. I just don't get her appeal and, to me, she overacts.

  12. Great list, but I too am surprised by some of the omissions. What about Cady McLain, Eva Lerue, Andrea Evans, Susan Haskell & Constance Towers. Gina Tognoni should have made the list as well, but, technically Marley, she would belong in the 1990s list. She started on OLTL in 1995.

  13. Would loved to have seen Jensen Buchanan on the list as well!

  14. I echo the salute to Ann Flood. What a role model her character was considering the era. If only that show could be exported to some of the world's nations where women are considered less equal than men.

Very happy to see Lois Kibbee. The You Tube clip of her confronting extended relations followed by being discovered at the bottom of the staircase is so striking even today.

I am crushed not to see Carla Borelli, one of my all-time favorites. Alexandra Neil's Ruby Wright on Texas was one of a kind, particularly her unique friendship with Tina Johnson's Lurlene Harper.

Someone who clearly left an impression was the late Gretchen Oehler on AW and Texas, Her Vivien Gorrow character lightened up any scene, no matter the tension level.

Thanks for the caring tribute to all these actresses.

  15. I would've loved to see Lindsay Hartley on the list. She kept Passions watchable for 10 years.

    ReplyDelete
  16. why is Rena Sofer listed under the 1980's when almost all of her work aired in the 1990's?

Overall i'd say many of those ladies deserved to be much, much higher on the list.

    ReplyDelete
  17. and why wasn't Gillian Spencer on any list? she's one of the most influential actresses in soap history! SOAP HISTORY. and what about Susan Haskell?

  18. Appreciate the time it took to compile the list but I'm shocked that Kristian Alfonso didn't even make the "Honorable Mentions". Seriously? Her performances over the past 27 years of Days of our Lives have been amazing, particularly her work in 2006.

  19. Eden Riegel? Youve got to be kidding me. Where the hell is Sharon Case? Shick just spanked every single couple in the SOW 20 year anniversary, beating out LnL. SC has been carrying front burner sl's for 15 years. Just because she isn't loud or over the top campy with her acting doesn't make her any less of a noteworthy actress. Clearly this is all a popularity contest. Kimberly McCullough should be on there, as young as she is, she carried that whole Stone/Aids sl and made it memorable.

  20. Thank you for finally mentioning Tamara Braun, easily one of the most underrated actresses in the daytime medium. Having bridged three soaps and won one Emmy for her role as Ava Vitali on DOOL, Tamara has over a short span of time, made herself a well respected name in the daytime world. For me personally, she made Carly Corinthos. No one before her or after has been able to bring forth the humanity and humility Tamara infused the character with. Her summer of fire as Carly was stuck in the Panic Room is just one of the reasons she should have been on the other list. In any other actress's hands, that Panic Room story could easily have failed. Her chemistry with both Ric Hearst and Ted King radiated off the charts.

  21. Kristian Alfonso should be in the top 5! The lady is fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Pity we some prime-time soap stars weren't included. I would have liked to see Michele Lee and Susan Sullivan (who was also on daytime) included. A soap is a soap is a soap... :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ruth Warrick and Louise Shaffer make honorable mention but Genie Francis makes #16???? And where is Jacquie Courtney? Not having her on this list should be considered a crime! I also would add Catherine Bruno to this list; she played Nora Fulton on "Edge Of Night" from 1981-83. Nora was a villianess par excellence! This official list? Meh.

  24. Great to see a few more of my favs on the honorable mention list such as Lois Kibbee, Maeve McGuire, Marcia McCabe, Lisa Peluso and the late Ann Williams.
A few names which should also be on this list, in my opinion, includes the extremely talented Maree Cheatham (Stephanie on Search and several other soaps), Sherry Mathis and Ann Flood.
Thank you so much for taking the time to put together this list.

  25. I am really surprised i DONT see Cady McClain on this list,50 greatest/HM. She IS by far my all time favourite daytime actress & i think that she is truley one of the best daytime actresses out there!!!
Although ITA! w/Florencia Lozano, shes fantastic! i love her!

  26. Sorry, just can't buy this list without Mary Beth Evans being on it.

  28. What about Nancy Frangione from Another World? She was bitch supreme with a soft side. Also Carmen Duncan as Iris Cory # 2. She made every scene she was in pop.

  29. no Mary Fickett?
her "Liz Thorpe" on THE NURSES and "Ruth Martin" on ALL MY CHILDREN were unforgettable.

and...not to take anything away from the other "honorable mentions"..some of my favorite actresses are there...but Dorothy Lyman and Ilene Kirsten?
Ms. Lyman's "Opal" on ALL MY CHILDREN and Ms. Kirsten's "Delia" on RYANS HOPE & "Roxie" on ONE LIFE TO LIVE are reason enough for them to be at the top of the "50 greatest actresses".
