Sunday night's episode of MAD MEN, "The Grown-Ups," dealt with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Like much of the United States, Harry and Pete had AS THE WORLD TURNS on the television in Harry's office when Walter Cronkite broke into a scene between Nancy and Grandpa Hughes.
"That's my dubious claim to fame," ATWT's Helen Wagner once said. "I'm in the Smithsonian on tape, saying, 'I gave it a great deal of thought, Grandpa,' as Cronkite broke the story."

And at the CBS studio on that day, the actors went right on with the live broadcast -- no one told them what had happened and that the special report had pre-empted the broadcast until they finished the episode. This full episode of ATWT which no one saw on TV in 1963 still survives at the Paley Center.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in the world of MAD MEN, two weeks ago Bert Cooper was watching an episode of SEARCH FOR TOMORROW in his office.
I finally was able to view the version of that uninterrupted episode at the Paley Center when I visited Manhattan last month. It was fascinating to watch the episode of that show after 40+ years.
