TV Guide Canada's "Suds Report"

In his weekly "Suds Report" column for TV Guide Canada, Nelson Branco covers the following headlines and more:

- ALL MY CHILDREN vets revolt!

- Brian Frons saves his ABC lineup for another year!

- Will ONE LIFE be cancelled next year?

- Is Kish’s kiss the greatest soap moment of 2009?

- Newcomb should be La Lucci's agent!

  1. I enjoy Nelson's columns; he has a lot of great information and he can be amusing. However, I'm really tired of comments like, "My wife Kim Zimmer", "My imaginary lover...Victor Webster", "My future wife Louise Sorel", and "The love of my life (Robin Strasser). He makes at least another dozen, similar comments. It's getting awfully tiresome and detracts from his writing. Maybe it's just his way of sucking up to the actors. I wish he'd reign it in.

  2. Wow, those comments he made about Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa really took me by surprise. From the outside they come across as a beloved couple. I guess you never know what's going on behind the scenes.

Yes Roger, you should be Susan's agent. Great idea about bringing Erica to OLTL. It's funny, that makes me think about that long running rumor that Robin Strasser and Susan Lucci were sisters. Dorian Lord and Erica Kane on screen together. That would be awesome!

  3. I generally enjoy Branco's columns. They're lively, informative, and certainly opinionated. The unfortunate thing is that a great deal of what he writes has a tone of contempt that lessens the reading experience for me.

Soaps are dying all around us, and while strong criticism could lead to improvement, Branco often hits below the belt, attacking actors on a personal level and disparaging shows for reasons that seem completely random. Hatred isn't productive. Perhaps he's attempting to be funny, but it's reading as petty and mean-spirited. And that tone undermines what might otherwise be an excellent series of columns.
