News Round-up: Panettiere, EASTENDERS, NBC, WGA

EASTENDERS helps nab child rapist
A pedophile was exposed after his victim watched a story about sex abuse on BBC soap EASTENDERS. She confided in her mo after seeing scenes in which Whitney Dean, 15, suffered at the hands of her stepdad. And yesterday married dadof-two Leslie Higgins, 73, was jailed for 12 years. The court heard he "ruined the girl's childhood". Higgins, of Ashford, Kent, admitted rape, sex assault and sexual activity with a child.

Hayden Panettiere tortured by classmates while on OLTL
Hayden Panettiere was bullied at school for being an actress. The HEROES star regularly used to miss lessons to shoot ONE LIFE TO LIVE - and her classmates resented it.

"I was tortured, emotionally tortured by these girls," Hayden, 19, told Details. "Every time I came back from filming, it would be me trying to find my way back into the clique. And they weren’t having it. I remember hearing in first grade, 'Oh, why does she get to skip school?' It wasn’t like I suddenly started feeling different. I always knew that I was."

Deep Soap: Memory Lane
Sara Bibel writes: "In a genre that increasingly ignores its history, Vicki’s trip down memory lane on Thursday’s One Life To Live was an unexpected delight. The culmination of these scenes, paralleling with scenes between Clint and Bo, was Vicki’s acknowledgement that she and Clint will always love each other. Clint similiarly said that he knew Bo and Nora still loved each other and it didn’t bother him in the least. It is possible to love someone long after the demise of a romantic relationship. It is possible to love multiple people in different ways at the same time. Television rarely reflects this reality. These scenes reminded me why I love daytime, and what the genre loses when it neglects characters over the age of 45."

VARIETY: Times still a-changin' at NBC
Hiring Silverman was clearly intended to be an unorthodox, not-business-as-usual-anymore choice. And that it was. Yet while much of the tumult surrounding Silverman's tenure had little to do with NBC's actual programming and performance, in the final analysis, it's difficult to say that the marriage took.

WGA West will represent CBS scribes
The WGA West has scored another small victory: organizing new-media writers at CBS studios. Fifteen Internet writers employed at CBS in the Los Angeles area unanimously voted to seek representation by the WGAW in a tally conducted by the National Labor Relations Board. Next, the writers need to negotiate a contract with their employer.

GUIDING LIGHT: Too Little, Too Late
"In a recent episode of Guiding Light, a distraught Olivia, lost and confused and unable to figure out what to do next, how to get on with living her life told Blake, 'I don't know what to do.' Blake's response, 'Go back to your roots. That's going to tell you everything.' This bit of advice might have been useful to the writers of GL a year ago, or more."

  1. Hayden Panettiere was on "Guiding Light" as Lizzie Spaulding, not on "One Life to Live." A simple search on IMDB.com would have answered any questions.

  2. SoapFan, have you been to IMDB? I remember well and it's also stated on IMDB that Hayden was on OLTL before she was on GL. I thought that was common knowledge.

  3. P.S. My criticism was directed to the article's author not Welovesoaps.com.

  4. I knew OLTL was right because she was talking about first grade. She was a little bit older on GL as Lizzie.
