  1. With the competitive field for Best Actor-Drama, I can see how Chandler would always fall short. (I'm rooting for Laurie, a two-time Globe winner, to finally take the trophy.) The Best Actress tally, on the other hand, could stand to lose Hargitay, who's best seasons were 3-4 years ago. Sedgwick and Hunter seem like votes made out of habit rather than recognition of strong work.(With random viewings, I've never gotten into either of their shows.)

I see the drama series race as a competition between LOST (network) and Mad Men (cable), with both being worthy winners (I'd vote for LOST. And FNL should've replaced any of the rest. The Shield, too.)

I'd be shocked if anyone usurped 30Rock for comedy. (For that matter, I can see all top six categories being repeats.) Fey's probably unstoppable, too, though Parker should've been tabbed a few years ago. And I'm thrilled for Chandra Wilson's two nods. I think she's a terrific performer and the best thing about Grey's.

  2. Blake, I think Chandler is sometimes too subtle for the Emmys but he is amazing and this is the role of his career.

Britton submitted in supporting this year and I was really hoping she would break through.

So many of the same people are nominated every year it sometimes feels like there aren't many slots available for others.

  3. Thank god all the crazy good nominations from the popular vote largely drowned out the horrible Family Guy nomination for comedy series.

    Some brief predix:

    Drama Series: Mad Men (duh)
Drama Lead Actor: Cranston or Byrne. Can't see Laurie winning for House's worst season. Maybe Hamm if Mad Men really sweeps.
Drama Lead Actress: Close. Or maybe Sedgwick finally gets hers.
Drama Supporting Actor: It's a crapshoot and I guess anyone could win. I'm thinking Emerson or Hurt.
Drama Supporting Actress: Wiest again. Although I'd love to see Jones win. They need to get rid of the Grey's ladies already.

Comedy Series: 30 Rock (Only The Office has any other chance)
Comedy Lead Actor: Baldwin again. Maybe Carrell if they finally want to reward him. Yay for the Clement nod.
Comedy Lead Actress: Probably Fey but Collette definitely has a chance for the DID. Hey, it worked for Erika Slezak.
Comedy Supporting Actor: Neil Patrick Harris, finally. I knew Piven would get snubbed for his 'mercury poisoning'.
Comedy Supporting Actress: Krakowski. If they really go crazy for 30 Rock. Although Amy Poehler could win for the Palin rap.

  4. Ah. I didn't know Britton had submitted in Supporting. Interesting. She would've had a better shot there. You're right about Chandler; in a mass judging contest, subtlety is usually swept under the rug.

It can be frustrating to see the same-old, same-old, but (obviously) basically all industry awards are guilty in some form or another. As I said before, the top six categories will likely go unchanged this year. The supporting races will be where all the action is.

The consensus is that the critics seem fairly satisfied with today's results, but with 6-7 noms per category, a few critical faves were bound to sneak in. Stick with five, Emmys!
