News Round-up: Emmys, Allison Janney, MELROSE

Kenin to depart Hallmark Channel
David Kenin, exec VP of programming at the Hallmark Channel, is leaving the company at the end of the month. Barbara Fisher, senior VP, original programming, and Michelle Vicary, senior VP, acquisitions and scheduling, will share Kenin's responsibilities until a replacement is named.

VARIETY: Choosing the right scene critical in scoring Emmy nod
Choosing the right scene is critical in scoring a nod. Peter Reckell, a DAYS OF ORU LIVES player on and off since 1983, landed on the ballot by selecting the episode in which his character Bo Brady told his mother, played by Emmy winner Peggy McCay, that her husband had died. "(Peggy's) been in a fraction of the scenes I've been in over the years, but she's been on four or five of the reels I've submitted," Reckell says.

While some soaps have won over the years for staging big events (fires, hostage crises) or writing fantasy episodes, Brian Frons, president of daytime at Disney-ABC, says that at the end of the day it's the relationship between the characters that can score an actor -- and a show -- a nomination."

"Too often physical jeopardy can be emphasized," he says. "But the truth is: Emotional jeopardy, when written and performed well, will garner the nominations.

Former GL cast member Allison Janney on the show's cancellation by CBS
"GUIDING LIGHT was my first job as an actress, and I was thrilled to be a part of the show. I was so sad to hear that it was going off the air. It was such a staple in so many people’s lives. It's a part of TV history now"

Janney recently received a Tony nomination for her role in the new "9 to 5" musical.

The CW's new MELROSE PLACE features bisexual publicist Ella
While the original series included an openly gay male character, this one includes a bisexual woman: Stylish publicist Ella, played by Katie Cassidy, who is in a casual relationship with fellow apartment-dweller David (Shaun Sipos). Ella's bisexuality will reportedly be revealed in the pilot via a kiss at a club. The casting call for the pilot included an "early 20's, gorgeous, exotic model type who catches 'Ella's' (Katie Cassidy) eye in a club and they share a passionate same sex kiss."

Yahoo Offers Soap Opera Recap
Following up its "Primetime in No Time," recap of the previous night's primetime TV shows, Yahoo has launched "Daytime in No Time," offering highlights from soap operas and game shows. On board as the initial sponsor of the three-minute video capsules is JC Penney, which aims to reach millions of women aged 18 to 49 in one place rather than advertising across several different daytime shows.

EDITOR'S NOTE: So far I have not seen soap operas in this recap only morning and talk shows.

Harding 'not offered' HOLLYOAKS role
