Former DAYS OF OUR LIVES star and SOAP TALK host Lisa Rinna told PopEater that GUIDING LIGHT won't be the last soap to go, and the entire genre may be extinct in five years.
Rinna said: "It was sad to see after 72 years that show cancelled, but to me, it's just the beginning. I think it's going to start a trend. It's a dying genre. I think it's really something that won't be around, maybe in five years."
Meanwhile, veteran network programmer Fred Silverman predicted the end of most daytime soaps at a TV symposium at Syracuse University last week. "They're very expensive to produce and they continue to shrink. I think in the next five years, three or four will survive out of a group that used to be 15."
