One Year Ago Today: Nuke Finally Kisses Again

Last year on this day, out of the blue, AS THE WORLD TURNS' Luke and Noah shared their third kiss. It was significant because it had been 211 days since the second kiss, which wouldn't be that long for some soap couples, but this wasn't an ordinary soap couple.

Luke and Noah were not torn apart by fate or circumstance. They fell in love, moved in together and were head over heals for each other. But for some reason never fully explained we suddenly couldn't see them kiss for seven long months. Websites started featuring a "kiss counter" which counted the days since their second smooch, fans took their cause to the mainstream media and international attention was brought to the show.

This is one case where it is absolutely certain that fan campaigning paid off. And it was unexpected for a lot of people because fans were campaiginng for gay kissing instead of against it.

Since that time AS THE WORLD TURNS has turned a corner. In a daytime first, a special episode was dedicated to celebrating gay pride featuring Cyndi Lauper. In January, Luke and Noah finally had sex for the first time. The show has gone from no gay kissing to lots of it. Noah and Luke actually kiss more now than any other couple on the show, and unlike most of the couples, work together to solve problems versus against each other. We've even seen kisses between Luke and his step-grandfather, Brian, and Noah and Zac. I would bet there have been more same sex kisses on ATWT in 2009 than any other show on television by far. It's nice to see progress.
