News Round-up: GREEK, Keiron Richardson, Oxygen

GREEK allows characters to grow older
The ABC Family Channel is doing something pretty smart in the new season of its hit series GREEK: Beyond letting the kids of Cyprus-Rhodes University behave more or less like real college kids (i.e., they have hormones), the show's creative team is allowing them to grow older as well.

This may not seem all that earth-shattering, but if you think about other TV shows, it's clear that one of the things that seems to terrify TV producers is that kids won't always be kids.

Two actors added to Gellar pilot
Adam Scott and Zak Orth have joined the cast of HBO's comedy pilot THE WONDERFUL MALADYS starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The single-camera comedy is set in New York and revolves around the dysfunctional lives of three siblings, Alice (Gellar), Mary (Molly Parker) and Neil (Nate Corddry), who lost their parents at a young age.

Breathing New Life Into Oxygen
After the NBCU acquisition, a network re-branding last summer jettisoned the pink O logo, and any pretense of feminine decorum. At the new Oxygen, where DFW (down for whatever) rules, there seems to be even more on-air drinking, swearing and cat-fighting, and no one apologizes for any of it. It's part and parcel of what the network calls “Generation O.”

CORRIE Stars To Get A Charity Grilling
CORONATION STREET star Tupele Dorgu will be joined by Samia Smith, Antony Cotton, Sue Cleaver and Michael Le Vell to do battle in the kitchen of Restaurant Bar and Grill in Manchester on April 26.

Celebrity Grilling in aid of The New Children’s Hospital Appeal – part of Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals Charity – will see two celebrity teams going head to head to cook signature bar and grill dishes as well as test their abilities front of house as waiters and waitresses and also behind the bar.

Keiron Richardson: There's no cull in HOLLYOAKS
Kieron Richardson (Ste Hay) denies there is a 'cull' happening at HOLLYOAKS, despite the impending departures of Jamie Lomas, Chris Fountain and Stuart Manning from the soap. The star said he asked HOLLYOAKS bosses if the rumours of several actors leaving were true - and was given a firm answer.

"Obviously I read it and enquired about it and it was all just made up and all lies," Kieron said. "(I) panicked for, like, point five of a second until I found out. I have no idea where they (the rumours) come from, I was just like, 'What's going on?' and they were like, 'No, it's all lies, it's all fine'. But obviously I am not getting chilled out on set or anything - I am just still doing my job as I always did and trying 110 percent."

THE PRICE IS RIGHT Set for Hi-Def IT Future
CBS has installed a file-based production system from Harris Corp. at CBS Television City in Hollywood to support the game show THE PRICE IS RIGHT. It's part of a broader rollout of the server technology across the network's technical infrastructure.

The system reflects the new way networks think about technology in a file-based world, as it was selected partly for its ability to interface with additional Harris servers in New York that CBS will use for primary program playout as the network gradually replaces legacy tape-based equipment on both coasts. Besides the potentially lucrative master-control installation in New York, supplying editing and storage for an entertainment show in Los Angeles is also a significant win for Harris as the company expands into the production space with its “One” strategy of providing end-to-end systems.
