Kudos to Soap Opera Weekly on the GL Cover

GUIDING LIGHT being canceled by CBS is the biggest news in the soap world in years so obviously the show deserved a cover on all the print editions of the magazines that cover the genre. I have not seen the cover of CBS Soaps in Depth yet but I certainly hope we'll see one there. Soap Opera Digest has a GUIDING LIGHT subscriber-only cover which features Otalia and Frank and their upcoming wedding.

Soap Opera Weekly has done us all proud by giving this story the coverage it deserves, on the front cover of the magazine on newsstands where longtime fans will see it and take notice. It's not enough to cover huge breaking news inside the magazine alone. Most lapsed fans are only going to flip through the pages if the cover catches their eye.

It is thrilling to see Charita Bauer, Beverlee McKinsey and Michael Zaslow on a national magazine cover again. This is what the show deserves and this is what the fans deserve. It doesn't matter if all three soap magazines have similar covers. Every news magazine had Barack Obama on the cover when he was elected President, and regularly have similar covers when breaking news occurs.

Sometimes things happen that are much bigger than which character is sleeping with the wrong person this week. Thank you to Soap Opera Weekly for recognizing that.

  1. Is there *no* way to get the Otalia/GL cover of Soap Opera Digest? I mean, seriously. That was just stupid not to have them on the newsstands cover since about 90% of their fans are brand new to the soap world (*because* of Otalia) and thus aren't SOD subscribers. Like me.

  2. Write to Digest. Newsstands and digital subscribers get one cover. Home subscribers usually get the same cover, but sometimes ATWT or GL will get a different cover. I'm not sure these folks realize the impact some of these couples have and that fans are willing to put their money where their mouth is to support them.

Despite Patch/Kayla being 20+ year soap legends, I would bet the Otalia cover would sell better on the newsstands. Guess we'll never know.
