News Round-up: Melrose, Wendy Richard, Billy Elliott

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz moves into MELROSE PLACE
The singer-actress has been tapped as a lead on the CW's MELROSE update, returning to series television seven years after landing her breakthrough role on the WB's 7TH HEAVEN.

On the CBS Par-produced MELROSE, Simpson-Wentz will play Melrose Place's newest resident, Violet, a bright-eyed but shrewd small-town girl and recent L.A. transplant who has come to town with a secret. Her character draws parallels to the original series' blond, budding-Southern-belle starlet, Sandy Harling (Amy Locane).

Simpson-Wentz joins the previously cast Michael Rady and Katie Cassidy.

"Billy Elliott" Boys to Perform 'Electrcity' at BC/EFA ABC and SOAPnet Salute tonight
David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, the three young stars playing the title role in the new Broadway hit, "Billy Elliot the Musical" will make a special guest star appearance tonight at the 5th Annual "ABC and SOAPnet Salute Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS," performing the song "Electricity."

Eastham playwright Jim Dalglish has finally completed “Starkweather,” a play he has been working on sporadically for several years, and now he’s going to have a reading of it as part of the New Provincetown Players’ winter reading series at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford St. In the show, Natalie Ross plays Mrs. Cook. Since becoming a full-time Cape resident she has written and directed “Eastham, Land of First Light, 2001.”

Funeral For EASTENDERS Actress Wendy Richard
More than 100 cast and crew members on the show are expected to be among the celebrities attending the service today in central London. The actress will be best remembered for her role as cardigan-wearing battle axe Pauline Fowler in EASTENDERS - a part she played for 21 years.

DAYS' Darin Brooks in Hawaii
In a vast soiree orchestrated by mega-event planner David Beahm, celebrities, dignitaries and media from around the world descended on the venerable Pink Palace on Saturday night to celebrate the hotel's grand reopening after a multimillion-dollar luxury makeover of guest rooms and public areas. Former GUIDING LIGHT and ONE LIFE TO LIVE actress Hayden Panetierre, Heather Graham and DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Darin Brooks joined Justin Long, former BACHELOR Lt. Andy Baldwin and his date, Miss Hawaii 2008 Nicole Fox, as well as former AMERICAN IDOL Jasmine Trias on the red carpet in the hotel lobby.

Tammy Blanchard cast in pilot
Former GUIDING LIGHT actress Blanchard and Mel Raido have joined ABC's drama EMPIRE STATE. The show is a contemporary Romeo and Juliet story about a blue-collar man falling in love with a wealthy girl. Blanchard will play the man's cousin and close friend, a successful attorney. Raido will play the girl's ruthless and manipulating brother.

Hair Asia covergirl Angel Locsin to tape new soap ONLY YOU in Korea
After her successful movie team-up with Lobo leading man Piolo Pascual, Angel Locsin is set to start working on her new soap opera, ONLY YOU, a Filipino adaptation of the popular Koreanovela of the same title. Angel will have leading men in the ABS-CBN teleserye, Sam Milby and Diether Ocampo. And they will tape portions of the show in the original setting which is Korea. Taping starts this March.
