CBS Shopping for GUIDING LIGHT Replacement?

According to a new article published by TV Week's Josef Adalian, CBS may soon decide to pull the plug on GUIDING LIGHT.

In the most significant indication that the network is seriously pondering life without GUIDING LIGHT, CBS has been talking to outside studios about potential replacement programming for the show, sources said.

Possibilities under discussion include both game shows and talk shows. CBS could easily cut its programming costs for the hour in half by switching away from a scripted drama.

Representatives for CBS and P&G declined comment.

In addition to contracting with an outside studio for programming to replace LIGHT, CBS daytime chief Barbara Bloom has been developing possible in-house candidates for the soap opera’s slot.

It’s possible P&G or CBS could attempt to keep the show alive in some form on the Internet, though doing so likely would require another radical reinvention of its production model.

If you would like to write Barbara Bloom and let her know you do not want to see GUIDING LIGHT off the air, here is the addresss:

Barbara Bloom
Senior VP, CBS Daytime Programs
CBS Television
7800 Beverly Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Writing to Bloom's boss, Nina Tassler (President, CBS Entertainment), might also be a good idea. Tassler reports to Nancy Tellem, President, CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group.

  1. as i said over on DC this morning, as GL goes, so goes the rest of daytime. if the longest running soap- hell TV show- in broadcast history can't stay on the air, no show is safe. AMC, OLTL, GH, ATWT would all be next. DOOL and Y&R would soon follow.

thanks for barbara bloom's address. i will be writing a letter this afternoon after i leave the office. it's important for ALL soap fans- not just those of GL- to be vocal about this. even what is viewed as the "least among equals" (though, personally i think GL is much better than GH or ATWT or AMC) must be supported.

    save the light!

  2. I wonder how long Bloom has had development deals in the works? In-house and outside studios too, sounds expensive. Thought they were trying too save money?

Hate to say GL has been dead since Wheeler took over. The only saving grace the network has is to introduce something new. Wheeler's had chance after chance to get it right and has only proven she's not capable of being an EP and maybe (at best) an associate director.

  3. Roger, you're one of the "GL Bloggers". Can you call your contacts there and find out if this is _real_ (i.e., something new), or more of the general cancellation smoke we've been hearing for years.

Nelson Branco implied GL was safe through 2010.

Can you confirm that they are now thinking about a Fall cancellation? It's time to get some FACTS on the table here, rather than another one of these non-soap media fire-fannings.

  4. Mark, I think now is the time to write to Barbara Bloom and others so if you want GL saved. I recommend going all out to do whatever we can do as fans. If the axe falls I don't want to feel like I didn't speak out when I had the chance.

  5. This is gathering credibility, I'm very sorry to say.

    I have already written CBS.

  6. Is Nancy Tellem's mailing address the same as Bloom's?
    Thanks
