We Love Soaps Salutes The Oscar Nominees

The 81st Annual Academy Awards will take place on Sunday evening at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The nominees from a diverse group of interesting films. Here's a rundown of the acting nominees who got their starts on soaps.

MELISSA LEO: The Lead Actress nominee (for Frozen River) starred on ALL MY CHILDREN as Linda Warner for a year. In this clip, from May 1984, she acts opposite Peter Bergman's Cliff.

HEATH LEDGER: The Supporting Actor nominee (for The Dark Knight) starred as Snowy in the Australian soap SWEAT in 1996. A non-English clip is the only one I could find, but it's really nice to see a young Ledger in action. In 1997 he appeared on HOME AND AWAY as Scott.

MARISA TOMEI: The Supporting Actress nominee (for The Wrestler) starred on AS THE WORLD TURNS as Marcy in the mid-80s. In this classic clip from 1984, Marcy has fantasy of being Cinderella opposite Phyllis Diller as her fairy Godmother.

BRAD PITT: The Lead Actor nominee (for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) landed the small but memorable role of Chris on ANOTHER WORLD in May 1987. It was his first TV speaking role and he acted opposite Kale Browne and David Forsyth. FUN FACT: Pitt lived with soap writer Thom Racina for two years as a "houseboy, Man Friday, secretary" and Racina helped land him the role on AW.
