News Round-up

These DAYS, Daniel's in danger & denial
Daniel splits with Kate next week on DAYS OF OUR LIVES and goes right for Chloe - who is engaged to Kate's son, Lucas.

"It's something he just can't seem to control," says Shawn Christian, who plays the devilish doctor. "He had her in his arms at midnight on New Year's and a phone call stopped them. Either that or a twitch of morality."

There's not much "morality" at the engagement party Kate throws for Lucas and Chloe later in the week.

"Lucas decks Daniel at the party because he thinks Daniel dumped Kate," says Christian. "Daniel probably deserves it on many levels, but it's actually Kate who breaks up with Daniel. She wants to focus on her family and her health."

After being dumped and decked, Daniel courts danger.

"He goes upstairs after he gets decked by Lucas and he finds Chloe," says Christian. "Her dress happens to be unzipped. Gentleman that he is, he helps her. Then he expresses his feelings, and she expresses her feelings."

After all these months of denial, Daniel and Chloe finally admit they care about each other.

SARA A. BIBEL: Pale Imitations
"Recasts are a necessary, accepted soap staple. I maintain that almost any character can be successfully recast if -- and this is a big if -- the casting director finds the right actor. However, AS THE WORLD TURNS decision to recast half of the show at once makes for an increasingly disconcerting viewing experience. In the past two weeks alone, Lucy, Maddie and Jade recasts have debuted. In the past year, Oakdale got a new Casey, Craig, Lily, Chris, and Mike.. Chris and Mike are already gone. At this rate, it wouldn't surprise me to see recasts for Nancy and Lisa, though that would mean there might actually be story for the veterans. Watching an episode has become a memory exercise. Is this bland brunette Maddie or Lucy? Their personalities are no clue, since the recasts don't share many personality traits with the prior incarnations of the characters."

EASTENDERS Nasty Nick tries to sell daughter
Nasty Nick Cotton leaves mom Dot horrified when he tries to sell her his daughter in upcoming scenes in EASTENDERS. The soap baddie, played by John Altman, is back in Albert Square with his daughter Dotty. Although he insists he's on the straight and narrow these days, Nick is set to shock Dot (June Brown) once again in scenes due to air next month.

Dot is said to be "horrified" when jailbird Nick, who is apparently after his mum's money, tells her his child is for sale. A source said the troubled character "shows no emotion and his evil grin sends shivers down her spine. She (Dot) always knew Nick would sell his soul for the price of some pick 'n' mix but she had no idea he would sell his own daughter."

VIVA HOLLYWOOD winner making a splash
Last spring 12 actors shacked up together in "Casa De Locos" on VH1's reality show VIVA HOLLYWOOD. It was Jersey City resident Berto Colon who not only mastered the "seven deadly sins of telenovelas" - passion, lust, charisma, drama, fire, seduction and scandal - he also achieved the title of "America's Numero Uno Telenovela Star."

Colon's career has gained momentum since last April when the show aired. He can be seen this spring on the NBC show KINGS, set to premiere on March 19.

"I am playing King Silas' security guard," said Colon. "It's quite a bit of camera time. A dream come true." KINGS is "a modern-day soap about a hero who rises to become the King of his nation, based on the biblical story of King David.

Colon has appeared on ONE LIFE TO LIVE and AS THE WORLD TURNS and still has his VIVA HOLLYWOOD prize to fulfill. As the victor, Colon walked away with a prize package that includes a contract with Telemundo and a role in one of their upcoming telenovelas among other prizes. Colon is still looking for a Telemundo project that is right for him and in the meantime, the bi-lingual actor, originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico, is working on perfecting his Spanish accent.

CORRIE stars are not being fired
CORONATION STREET bosses have denied reports that three, favourite established stars, are to get the boot. A tabloid paper has claimed that producers are planning to get rid of Betty Driver (Betty), Eileen Derbyshire (Emily) and Barbara Knox (Rita) in a bid to cut costs, but bosses have said this is completely untrue.

A CORRIE spokesman said: "The producer Kim Crowther sees the older actors in the show as absolute Coronation Street gold and would never seek to lose them. Barbara Knox and Eileen Derbyshire will be leading some big storylines in 2009. Betty Driver always provides gravitas behind the bar at the Rovers and we will continue to seek to use her where we can."

HOLLYOAKS producer Bryan Kirkwood on why he decided to leave
"I always said that I'd only do three years in the job. It's a relentless job with no wrap party to look forward to! I'm incredibly pleased and proud with what we've all achieved at Lime Pictures in turning the show around. Three years was all I wanted to do before handing it over."

CADY MCCLAIN: A New Beginning
"My wish for 2009 is that I hear little to nothing more about Paris Hilton, Sarah Palin or Jeff Conaway."

Will 2009 be the year Brenda returns to GENERAL HOSPITAL?
"We're trying to make it work again," Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda) tells Soap Opera Weekly in the Jan. 13 issue.
