DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES stars Kathryn Joosten and Dana Delany (ex-Hayley, AS THE WORLD TURNS; ex-Amy, LOVE OF LIFE) attended the "Heroes & History Makers Gala" at Sky Bar at The Mondrian Hotel last night in West Hollywood. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Heather Tom was also in attendance.
The star-studded evening benefitted NO on 8 - Equality California. Proceeds will go to fight Proposition 8, which would take the right to marry away from gay and lesbian couples.
NIGHT SHIFT's Chad Allen was also at the event.
The soap stars spoke with Out in Hollywood's Greg Hernandez:
Heather Tom: "I think it's really about equality, it's about equality and fairness. This whole election season is really thise two things. This is really about providing rights and benefits to those who, at this point, are the only group that's it's legal to discriminate against and that's wrong. We look back at the times that interracial marriage was illegal and we're embarrassed by that. I think right now is the time to recify another embarrassment."
Chad Allen: "I've done more of answering phones and making phone calls to undecided voters and standing in street corners to raise money than I have done anything else or for any political campaign or proposition in my lifetime. It's been a really interesting process. I feel it very deeply. I'm not getting married quite yet. It's a personal decision, my partner and I aren't quite thete yet but I hope to be. When we are ready, I really hope to God that marriage is there and available to us just like it's available to my brothers and my sisters."
"I'm shocked by how many people who still don't know what Proposition 8 is or why we're voting on it," he said. "A lot of people will say to me, 'What? They can't do that. How could they do that?' So, I'm scared to death that our message won't get out fast enough, clear enough and large enough before November comes. It's ridiculous to me that we're up against $26 million or more of out state money from people who don't live in the state of California who feel that it is right and fair that they should send their dollars to defeat my happiness here."
Dana Delaney: I have a lot of gay friends who have gotten married and I see how much it means to them because it's something they've wanted to do their whole lives and it;s really a spiritual thing and an acceptance by the world and the community. I personally could care less about getting married but I say, 'Have at it!' (laughs). It's good for everybody if gays get married. It's good economically, it's good for our state."
Kathryn Joosten: "I believed gays should be allowed to marry back 10 years ago. You have two people who want to combine their lives and make them one, they should have all the same legal rights. For crying out loud, be fair, be just."
