News Brief

Flannery Sees the 'Light'
Soap worlds will collide, and so will two acting powerhouses, when four-time Emmy winner Susan Flannery from B&B directs four-time Emmy winner Kim Zimmer on GUIDING LIGHT. The episode --airing October 13--focuses in part on a new plot twist that has Zimmer's fifty-something character, Reva, unexpectedly pregnant.

ESPN fantasy expert Matthew Berry guesting on OLTL
"Over the next two weeks, I'll be taping a two-episode arc for the ABC Daytime Soap ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I play 'Neil,' a jewelry appraiser. When we did our 'Endless Drama' soap opera parody ads for fantasy baseball this year, we shot them on the ONE LIFE TO LIVE set and, for the sake of authenticity, with the OLTL executive producer, director and crew. Well, apparently, they liked whatever it is I do and called recently with a part 'that's perfect for me.' It makes sense. As one of my co-workers sarcastically noted when told about it, 'Am I the only one who is surprised at the notion of Matthew being part of daytime drama?'"

Soap stars to attend Animal Haven Shelter's annual luncheon
Animal Haven Shelter will hold their 41st Going Home Luncheon on Sunday, October 28th at Dante Caterers in Queens, NYC. The luncheon will also include a performance by Catherine Hickland (ONE LIFE TO LIVE) and appearances by Grant Aleksander (GUIDNG LIGHT), Melissa Gallo (ONE LIFE TO LIVE), Jill Larson (ALL MY CHILDREN), Robin Mattson (most recently AS THE WORLD TURNS) and Louise Sorel (DAYS OF OUR LIVES). The day's activities will also feature a silent and live auction.

Kraft Bakes Up Love, Suspense, Cookies in Web Soap Opera
Peek Freans, the Kraft lifestyle cookie that was created with the notion of being "better-for-you," just got a little bit "badder." Beginning this week, the 150-year-old Canadian biscuit line (which also is sold in parts of the U.S.) will find itself embroiled in a series of love, hate, mystery and heartbreak storylines as Kraft looks to market the brand to a hipper and younger mobile audience. On Sept. 18, soap opera fans can tune in via Internet, podcast and iTunes feeds to watch AS THE COOKIE CRUMBLES.

AMC's Big Twister
A state-of-the-art tornado will hit ALL MY CHILDREN's Pine Valley Oct. 16. "We're taking CGI effects to the next level," head writer Chuck Pratt says. "We're not just breaking the fourth wall, we're breaking the third wall, too. It's big, groundbreaking stuff." The devastation continues Oct. 23 when fan fave Vincent Irizarry returns to the soap as evil doc David Hayward.

New Comedy Web Series, POOR PAUL, Debuts Today on KoldCast TV in HD
The series stars Kevin G. Schmidt, who recently took over the role of Noah on Y&R.

Y&R Sees Double
Veteran actress Jeanne Cooper — Kay on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS — finally won her first competitive Emmy this summer, after 11 nominations and a lifetime-achievement award. Will she make it two in a row? Cooper should have won the gold back in 1990 when she doubled as Kay's look-alike Marge, a greasy-spoon waitress with dubious morals, and may finally get her due. My spies tell me Marge will return to the show this fall, just as the unstoppable Cooper turns 80.

Sexy new girlband The Saturdays are turning up on weekdays — in HOLLYOAKS. Gorgeous Frankie, Vanessa, Una, Mollie and Rochelle have landed their first acting gig, appearing in the steamier late-night version of the Channel 4 show in November.

Smell like a HOLLYOAKS star
In a first for UK TV, Lime Picture’s HOLLYOAKS is pioneering a new range of male and female fragrances that will allow fans to smell like their favourite cast members. The new perfume range, which boast the above alluring aromas, have apparently been in development for over a year and are said to have had the full backing of the cast – many of whom have been involved in the design and packaging process.
