News Brief

'World Turns' Successfully for Maura West
West (Carly, AS THE WORLD TURNS) tells The Republican: "They tape the shows by sets. Each day there are many different sets, around six or seven, and numerous scenes, around 24, as well. Believe it or not, we shoot an entire episode, sometimes even a little more than that, in one day. Also, the episodes are taped in advance, but just enough ahead so they can go back and make changes such as editing. Having played her for so many years, I can't help but to blend a little bit with her character. We both feel strongly devoted to our families, are willful, and are driven to protect those we love."

TOM CASIELLO: When I’m Wrong...
"Lest you think I sit here on my couch in Brooklyn, passing down judgment from my elite pedestal of unemployment, assuming I know more than others, I wanted to take this opportunity to say: I'm wrong. A lot. And I have no problem admitting it.

DEEP SOAP: Not As Advertised
Sara A. Bibel blogs: "It’s possible that GH has set this up the possibility that Lulu is hallucinating as a red herring. Perhaps the show is waiting for Tony Geary (Luke) to return from his annual summer vacation, so that Luke and Laura can have an emotional reunion before she goes public with her recovery. If that’s the case, I’ll eat my words. So far, however, Laura’s much heralded return is playing like a bait and switch."

Palestinian soap in hot water over PLO plot
As television dramas go, it was a modest affair. There was just one camera, a cast of 14 and all scenes were shot on the streets of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank. The budget for the 10-episode series was about £120,000 - less than the cost of a single episode of a western soap opera.

But for the Palestinians, the television show MATAAB marked a rare effort to produce a homegrown soap that would entertain as much as challenge its audience, tackling difficult issues of corruption and romance as well as the Israeli occupation.

Even that was too much for some. Before the first episode was screened, the state television channel, the Palestine Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), took the show off the air without explanation and has not broadcast it since.

Matabb's opening night should have been at the start of September to coincide with the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, which is also a time for much-discussed TV dramas across the Arab world.

Since the ban, it has been broadcast on a private television channel available only in parts of the West Bank and on the internet in Arabic with English subtitles, yet the show has won a modest but loyal audience.

Gaelic TV to produce a new soap
Yesterday the BBC and MG Alba, the Gaelic media company, unveiled the line-up for the first night of broadcasting for the much-awaited new television channel - but its executives admitted that its funding will not allow its current format to continue for more than two years. The station's main plan for drama is to develop a soap opera.

"Our budget is £14m, whereas S4C in Wales has £95m, but our aim is to develop a long form drama, basically a soap centred in a Gaelic-speaking area," said Alan Esslemont, head of content.

Wedding bells for HOLLYOAKS
When it comes to HOLLYOAKS characters there are few to match the appeal of Calvin Valentine. The village's resident copper, and goody two-shoes, has also become the soap's heart-throb, thanks to his hunky looks.

But his many fans could be in for a shock. The nice guy might be about to turn bad on the eve of his wedding to Carmel.

Life after GRANGE HILL: Where are they now?
The final bell has rung at GRANGE HILL after the BBC axed the school drama after 30 years. Today, the final episode of the series will air on BBC One. For a show that became a British institution, it understandably created several unforgettable characters. We thought we'd take a closer look at ten of the best. So, where are they now?
