News Brief

Deep Soap: Revisionist History
Sara A. Bibel blogs: "Renowned soap writer Douglas Marland once said that all story cones from backstory. Great stories spring from throwing characters with decades of conflict together in unexpected ways. Every conversation that two longtime characters have should be based upon their history. That’s why viewers smile in anticipation whenever THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS’s Victor and Jack or ALL MY CHILDREN’s Erica and Adam cross paths. Sometimes soaps decide that the best way to generate new story is to change the show’s history. Fans call it retconning."

TOM CASIELLO: Speechless
GH is "having a known terrorist (who held an entire hospital hostage at one point and got away with it), blow up a clinic with people trapped inside the next day" on the day after September 11th. Not good.

PATRICK ERWIN: From Bad to Good or Good To Bad: Seven Soap Characters Who Changed Before Our Eyes
"Most soap characters serve a purpose and stay in their designated slot: heroine, villain, rouge, or temptress. But every once in a while, a character will undergo a major metamorphosis and make a dramatic change, redeeming their wicked ways or shedding their goodness to get in touch with their inner bad seed."

PREVIEW: Will Sonny's Old Flame Snuff Kate's Wedding?
Michael Logan is reporting: GENERAL HOSPITAL's Kate thinks her upcoming wedding to mobster Sonny Corinthos is cursed after finding blood on her reception dress. And now that curse can be confirmed. On Sept. 19, Kate's cousin Olivia — who had a fling with Sonny back in high school — will turn up at the nuptials with some startling scoop about Kate's oh-so-secret past. The role will be played by ABC soap stalwart Lisa LoCicero (LOVING, THE CITY, ONE LIFE TO LIVE).

"Sonny has invited Olivia to the wedding, unbeknownst to Kate," LoCicero says. "He doesn't know there was quite a rivalry between the two women or that Olivia has something under her belt that's going to create big excitement—and a lot of friction."

UAE stops tribal TV drama
The United Arab Emirates has stopped a Ramadan soap opera after complaints in Saudi that it was stoking ancient tribal rivalries, Arab media reported this week. The UAE official news agency WAM said that President H H Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan had ordered Abu Dhabi Television to end broadcasts of SAADOUN AL AWAJY, which had been running nightly throughout the Ramadan “in response to appeals by several Arab tribes”. Saudi authorities have been concerned about a resurgence of tribal sentiment in recent years.

Saudi-owned website Elaph said a Saudi official visited the UAE with a letter from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz asking for the historical drama, set from 1750-1830, to be cancelled following lobbying by descendents of tribesman depicted in the serial. There was no official confirmation of the Saudi request but Saudi media have been reporting tribal anger for weeks.

Elaph said this was the second soap opera to be axed this year over fears of stirring up tribal animosities after Saudi-owned MBC shelved FINJAN AL DAM (Cup of Blood).
