News Brief

INTERVIEW: Y&R's Christel Khalil
“I left [Y&R in 2005] because of stress,” Christel tells Tulsa World. “I was so young; I wasn’t able to handle it. I needed the break – I needed the chance to relax and do what I wanted. Besides doing a guest spot on MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, I wasn’t doing anything.”

Davetta Sherwood took over the role, but the powers that be at Y&R really wanted Christel back. “They asked me to come back a few times, but I said no. After about a year, they asked again. I’d had a year off; I felt rested and ready to go back. Plus, I was really missing everyone.”

“I like that Lily has morals and values. She’s not out to hurt anyone. Even through this whole Chloe thing, she finds a way to relate and have compassion for her situation. Lily and (her father) Neil are just about two of the only characters who are just nice people – they are really honorable.”

EASTENDERS and the Watershed Conundrum
EASTENDERS is well known for providing some of the most dramatic television moments of the year. Every year. Towards the end of last week the long-running story of Jase Dyer's involvement with his old "firm" came to its chilling conclusion as Jase met his own (East)end on what should have been his wedding day. And as surely as night follows day, the usual crop of complaints from viewers for whom the drama proved a little too realistic, and Ofcom references to the watershed, come shooting up like weeds.

Sexy pics from HOLLYOAKS calendar

Sexy HOLLYOAKS stars Roxanne McKee, Zoe Lister, Jennifer Metcalfe and Gemma Merna didn’t leaf much to the imagination in their favorite lingerie.

And the curvy babes also gave some hints for any fella wanting a date with them.

Jen, who’s single after splitting from footballer Jermaine Pennant, said it only takes one beer to impress her. The brunette, 25—cover girl of the latest Loaded mag —said: “I like it when a guy gets the bar staff to bring a pint over and they say, ‘It’s from him over there,’ and then he just leaves.”

Roxanne, 24, added: “I like the dark brooding thing that Johnny Depp’s got going on.”

TV Guy: MAD MEN brilliant but a bit stand-offish
"While its fans are faithful, this much-admired series has yet to attract a large audience. Part soap opera and part anthropological study of the gender roles and office mores of a bygone age, MAD MEN often seems deliberately joyless. It offers sobering proof that good writing, interesting characters and meticulous art direction are not enough to produce a hit show — especially when an audience is held at an emotional arm's length."

Nielsen finds audiences are aging
The adults 18-49 demographic remains the gold standard among advertisers -- yet TV auds keep getting greyer.

According to Nielsen's 2008-09 national universe estimates, the 55-plus age bracket is by far the fastest-growing TV audience demo -- accelerating at twice the rate of the overall TV audience.

The ratings company estimates that 71.4 million TV viewers are over age 55, up 2.7% from last year. In comparison, total viewers over the age of 2 number 290 million, up 1.3% from last year.

The 55-plus group also far outpaces younger demos. The number of adults 18-34 watching TV next year will increase 1.5% to 68.2 million. And the 18-49 demo will see only a 0.7% increase (to 119.1 million). Teens 12-17 (40.8 million) will grow by 1.2%.

The growing population of older auds could mean a greater disconnect between total viewers figures and young adult numbers. In other words, shows targeted at aging boomer folk may post boffo total audience ratings but limp in the demos that advertisers care about.
