News Brief

A Coup Behind the Scenes at DAYS OF OUR LIVES?
Lynda Hirsch: "I know who the unnamed diva is, and she has been doing that for years to all the writers and all her scene partners. The gal even redecorates sets. So her line changing is hardly anything new.

The Writers Guild of America is going to bat for Higley. To add more kindling to the flames, during the writer's strike Higley was writing scripts even though she did not have permission to do so.

Sony Pictures, which owns and distributes DAYS does not want to go head to head with WGA. They want Higley to continue as head writer."

Deep Soap: In Praise of Network Executives. No, Really.
Sara A. Bibel writes: "It's time for me to eat some crow. The ratings are out. Despite my fears that that they were misleading, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS's heavy promotion of its 'Sudden Impact' storyline worked. The promos announced that the story began Friday, July 25. The rest of the week's episodes ranged from 3.4 to 3.7 in Household ratings. Friday the show surged to a 4.0 in HH - the highest rated episode in over a month. There was a huge jump from Thursday to Friday, particularly among younger viewers."

McKenzie Westmore's Dad is a man of a thousand alien faces
Karla Hayward writes: "To interview an Oscar winner is a coup for any writer this far from Hollywood. To chat with the man who helped create some of the favourite heroes and detested villains of your childhood is something even sweeter.

Such was this writer's luck when Michael Westmore came to St. John's with his wife Marion. Westmore was the primary makeup supervisor and designer for the STAR TREK series for 18 years, and oversaw more than 650 episodes, including THE NEXT GENERATION, DEEP SPACE NINE and VOYAGER. Responsible for creating some of the most amazing creatures in the universe, he also managed to pick up some 30 Emmy nominations along the way.

His daughter, McKenzie Westmore, plays Sheridan Crane on PASSIONS. She also starred as Robert De Niro's daughter in Raging Bull, and appeared in Star Trek Insurrection and a number of STAR TREK series episodes.

Westmore's youngest daughter, Michelle, serves as controller of one of the major entertainment management companies."

Wauwatosa actor on Friday's DAYS
An actor from Wauwatosa, Brandon DeShazer, showed up on DAYS OF OUR LIVES Friday.

"I play Harry. He's a detective working in Salem and he's the extremely intelligent one. You give him a computer and he can sit in your living room and solve your crime in 20 minutes."

Lucci spends "A Night in Hong Kong"
Marylou Whitney rolled into Congress Park by rickshaw for her summer gala in her usual grand style Friday night, dressed in a butter yellow dress, with diamonds and rubies at her neck and ALL MY CHILDREN star Susan Lucci at her side.

The theme of the gala this year was a "A Night in Hong Kong." About 300 people gathered outside the Canfield Casino to watch dancers perform Chinese dances under a towering, inflatable Buddha. Red banners bearing the Chinese characters for good fortune hung from the walls. A dance troupe from New York City, Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar, preceded Whitney holding a dragon over their heads.

Former AMC hunk Consuelos to UGLY BETTY
Mark Consuelos, the former ALL MY CHILDREN star who is married to Kelly Ripa, will guest-star on this season's third episode.

"No one is budging as to who Mark is playing or who he will share scenes with. All I have been able to suss out is that he'll be filming on the 'Mode' set, and that his character's arrival plays into a major story arc."

Badman bonds with Hunter Tylo
Whenever Badman Gulshan Grover of Times of India the is in the US, he is always spotted wining and dining with Hollywood celebrities. Last weekend, he was in LA and this time he was spotted hobnobbing with the actors of THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. Badman spent hours at CBS studios LA on the sets of the internationally-acclaimed show, where he caught up with the star cast.

When we asked him about it, he said the producer and some of the cast are his personal friends. "Just wanted to hang and chat with them," he laughs. And, we wonder what’s with the special chit-chat with sexy Hunter Tylo? "Oh, she’s been a friend of years and she was generally enquiring about India."

MARLENA DE LACROIX: Second Thoughts on the Second Episode of GH: NIGHT SHIFT 2
"I thought the second episode of GENERAL HOSPITA: NIGHT SHIFT 2, which aired this week, was an improvement over the first. The pacing was much better and the script had clarity. Although written by debuting soap headwriter Sri Rao, it felt like a more experienced soap writer had given the whole thing a rewrite or at least a polish."

PRIVATE PRACTICE lands Billy Dee Williams
In what is being described by setsiders as "a very moving role," Williams (Touissant, GH: NS; ex-Jim, GL) will play a patient of Taye Diggs' Dr. Sam Bennett. The storyline: BDW has been dutifully caring for his lady as she sings the blues (his wife is addled by dementia-type symptoms), yet he has been doing so with selfless disregard for his own declining health.

Special episodes of DAYS during the Olympics
Beginning on August 11, DAYS OF OUR LIVES will offer special programming because of NBC's Olympic coverage. Concerned that certain parts of the country might not get to see DAYS everyday during the games, the show will kick off two limited-arc storylines. "We didn't want to advance our front-burner stories knowing some fans would be missing out," explains Bruce Evans, senior vice president, Daytime and Drama Programming.
