News Brief

P&G's Inner Soap Opera Continues
From today's FOX 411: "Procter & Gamble? Their logo was long associated with the sign of the devil. Criticism from me, they’re not going to care very much.

But this week is the last for Martha Byrne, star of AS THE WORLD TURNS. She’s been there for 24 years, since she’s 15. She’s the reason people — young mothers her age — watch. The company forced her out.

Now, over at the company’s other show, GUIDING LIGHT currently being filmed like an underground college project, three time Emmy winner Kim Zimmer, that show’s star since the 80s, has had enough. She sent this out to her fans, one of whom forwarded it here.

So, you ask, what are CBS and P&G up to? I haven’t a clue and there’s no there to ask. But offloading the big name stars, purposely turning off fans, all of that sounds suspiciously like a plan to get out of the business. I’m just sayin’."

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS offers reasons to watch on new DVD
Malene Arpe reviews the new DVD: "You can always judge a show by the quality of the deleted scenes, and the 40 minutes on the (strike-shortened) Season Two FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS DVD certainly weren't cut for lack of quality. They add to the characters and some are discarded little stories you wish you could see more of. The just-renewed show is brilliant – stupid murder storyline notwithstanding – and if you aren't watching because you don't like football or Texas or brilliant shows, you're missing out big time and you must immediately avail yourself of the DVD so you can be ready when the new season starts. So it will get good numbers. And be renewed again. And I won't have to cry myself to sleep on my Taylor Kitsch pillow.

The cast and crew commentaries and the 35 minutes from the William S. Paley Television Festival panel go a long way towards explaining why this little show about high school football is so good. It is all shot on location near Austin – no soundstages. The dirty house Riggins lives in is just a dirty old house. The mega church Lila attends is an actual mega church and the parishioners are involved. Actors are encouraged to improvise, elaborate on or shorten what's written and let the small, intimate moments play out. All things we'll all miss out on if you don't smarten up and start watching."

EASTENDERS stars Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen rant after being refused entry to Bafta bash
The Mirror is reporting: We're used to their hilarious bustups as warring couple Ricky and Bianca on EASTENDERS. So we were thrilled to witness a Rickaaaaay! situation in real-life. Sid Owen and Patsy Palmer turned every bit as feisty off-screen as they are on when they delivered a comedy tirade after last night's TV Baftas.

We watched in amazement as things got heated after they were refused entry to the aftershow bash at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane when a bouncer failed to recognise them. D'oh! And having forgotten to get their wrists stamped with the VIP badge, and Sid having forgotten his ticket, the dizzy duo were left out in the cold.

At one point, carrot-top Patsy, 35, did her best Bianca impression and gathered quite an audience. Patsy said: "Bleedin' 'ell! I can't believe this - this is all we need!"

An onlooker said: "It was just like a scene in EASTENDERS, but even better because it was live. In true Bianca style Patsy's voice was getting louder and louder. And quite rightly so. The bouncer was being ridiculously strict about it."

Then Sid, 36, weighed in, yelling: "Oh come off it, mate. You're 'avin a laugh ain't ya? We've been at the awards all day. You gotta let us in."

The exasperated star then grabbed Patsy's arm and said: "Come on, let's go 'ome. I've had enough."

At that point the chief security guard finally got involved. Realising their mistake, he scolded his dim-witted minion and after much to-ing and fro-ing Sid and Patsy were eventually ushered back in.
